Zainab and David
How We Met
David and I were high school sweethearts and now, I am a photographer studying journalism and he is a United States Marine. We met in 2012 and less than half a year later in our senior year anatomy class, we began to spend more time with each other to study (not because we liked each other or anything, right?) I was going through several surgeries in that year alone due to a gastrointestinal disease I was born with. David was nothing but helpful and was always very supportive as a friend and that was the reason why I began to slowly fall in love with him each day. He did everything as a friend to make sure I was happy and comfortable whenever we were together.
He saw everything I didn’t like about myself and made me feel even more beautiful with it. About a year later, he was sent off to the United States Marine Corps. boot camp and then ITB (infantry training). It was very hard for me to cope with the distance but I knew I wanted to be with no one but David in my life. NOT TO MENTION, with all I was going through; medical condition and David being away– BOTH of our families were unsupportive due to the fact that we didnt share the same faith. 3 years later, David and I are happily engaged with both families convinced and happy for us and excited for our wedding this winter! Moral of the story, do not give up on the one you love, even if it seems like it would never work out.
How He Asked
Summer 2016 was coming to an end and we had barely spent any time together as we both were working hard to save up for the wedding and him being away for annual military training. I had known I had Friday Sept. 2 off and I figured I would stay home or schedule photoshoots but instead David told me to cancel all plans made and that we both deserved a day to spend together and I couldn’t be more happy. We drove to Lake Michigan and the weather was amazing– sunny and breezy.
We walked over to the light house and the whole walk down, he was telling me how much he loved me. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen but it just felt like the best day of my life yet. As soon as we got to the light house, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
I didn’t know how to react or if I should jump in the lake out of happiness but instead I said “YES” and hugged him.
