Sarah and Zachary
How We Met
Zachary and I met through church when we were 16. We worked on several mission trips, led worship together, and just became really great friends. Neither of us had never dated- ever. I was never interested in Zach, but he said the first time he met me, he knew we would be together forever. Zach helped my family do some aesthetic home repairs one summer and totally got on my mom’s good side! I had definitely put Zach in the friend zone for 2 years, but as soon as we were leaving to go off to college, I realized I couldn’t live without him. After this realization, I called Zach and asked if we could talk. He said that he had been wanting to talk to me too. We decided to meet the next day for breakfast. I had this grand plan and was going to wait til we got inside to discuss how I was feeling, but as soon as I got to the parking lot, I was terrified. I walked over to his truck shaking. He gives me a hug and says, ” will you be my girlfriend?” before I can even say anything. I said yes and we walked inside holding hands. We held hands all through college. He is still my best friend and I love him more than my 18 year old heart to even begin to imagine. We have been together through late nights studying, finals, new friendships, success, travels, and just growing up. Love is a choice. We chose to love each other for the people we were at 18 and the people we new we were going to grow into as we progressed in college. Dating at 2 different schools was a challenge, but we made it work. The times we were together were even sweeter and the times we were apart helped our communication and relationship grow. I cannot imagine my life without Zach and I am so glad we are about to graduate our undergraduate work on the same day coming this spring and continue our adventure together!
How He Asked
It was Zachary’s 22nd birthday, so of all the days to get engaged, I was not expecting this one! I had a super fun day for us planned, but Zach asked if we could just go eat sushi and go for a hike- 2 of our favorite things. We go out and have sushi and he asks if we can run a couple of errands before we go to the park. As we get to the park it is still light out, so we hike down to a water fall and are talking about our future. We are dreaming and picking out future travel and adventure plans. One of the things I love most about Zach is his ability to make me feel fearless, safe, and brave. As it starts to become sunset, we go up to the top of the hill and overlook the river. Right before we get to the top he suggests we take another trail that goes to the side. I’m extremely confused why we would hike up to the top, just to turn around again. About 2 minutes down this other trail, he says we can go ahead an go to the top now. I ask if he’s sure this time and we make it to the top of the hill. He suggests we stand at this overlook and he pulls me into a hug and wraps his arms around me. He then takes my hand and starts telling me how much he loves me and wants to adventure together forever. I am completely clueless until he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small, wooden box.
I see him get on his knee and he asks, ” Will you be my birthday present?” The answer was an ecstatic, ” Yes! Yes! Absolutely YES!”
He stands up and we hug and laugh and tear up and I ask about 50 times, ” Is this REAL life?!” He says, ” So, do you want the ring?” I was completely surprised all over again! He puts the ring on my shaky hand and we hug more. After that, I realize he had a photographer capture the whole thing on film. We took a few shots and walked around and simply took in the reality that we are getting married! Wow! this is REAL life. Zach is my person, my first kiss, and my truest love.
Zach exceeded every dream of getting engaged. From the words he said, to the location, to the photographer, to the ringbox that he made out of exotic wood. Life is better with Zachary and I am beyond thankful that we get to spend our lives together.
