Vanessa and Kal

Wedding Proposal Ideas in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

How We Met

We met on MySpace back when it was popular. Kal and I have similar music tastes and he saw that I liked the same bands he did so he started talking to me. Our conversations went from music to banter about everything else. We found out that we both have the same warped (some would say inappropriate) sense of humor. We’ve been together making each other laugh ever since. We first met on 07/07/07 and will marry that same day ten years later. I consider Kal my best friend. He’s the first person I want to talk to about my day and it is his arms I seek when I need comfort. He is a kind, generous, loving and hilarious man. I am so grateful I have him in my life.

How He Asked

Back in 2016 we mutually agreed it was time to start planning our wedding so that we could hold it on our 10th anniversary this year. We arranged to have the engagement ring made. I went with him because I had a specific idea of what I wanted. I didn’t want a simple solitaire. I think they are absolutely stunning but I come from a creative background and wanted to create something different. Some friends thought it was a little weird to have the pre-wedding shoot before we were engaged but we’re practical people. We have a limited number of days off from work; if we had the shoot this year we’d probably wouldn’t have enough days off for the wedding and the honeymoon too. We decided to have it in spring in New Zealand so that we could capture the gorgeous cherry blossoms in all their glory. I suggested a helicopter ride up to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park while we were there but Kal declined at first, citing financial constraints. I was disappointed but I agreed we shouldn’t blow our budget. I didn’t know it at the time but that was part of his ploy. He wanted me to think the helicopter ride to the mountains wasn’t important to him but he had already decided to propose there.

I had an inkling he would pop the question sometime in September but I didn’t know exactly when. It is his birthday month and he knows I wouldn’t refuse him anything during that time. Of course there was also the upcoming shoot, it could happen then. But before the trip he showed me pictures of the ring half done with the diamonds still not set. I won’t lie, I was pretty upset. However I told myself that we’re going to New Zealand, one of the most beautiful places in the world. We’ve always wanted to go there so no matter what happens it would still be a vacation to remember. I was determined to enjoy myself. Unbeknownst to me he got the jeweler in on it too. She deliberately told him to show me those pictures to throw me off. It worked! The photographer knew about it too. Kal told him about this plan before we even flew over. They sneakily made arrangements with each other whenever I wasn’t around. The helicopter ride happened on the second day of the shoot.

By then we already had a full day of shooting and were extremely pleased with the photos. Getting on the helicopter was another issue. The cloud cover was heavy that day and the pilot could not land on his usual place on the mountain due to poor visibility. He asked Kal if this was going to be an issue. Kal told him he didn’t care where it was as long as it was a mountain because he wanted to propose. The ride up was exhilarating. We swooped between narrow craggy peaks and snow filled valleys. I was thrilled. It was incredibly lovely and one of the best experiences of my life. When we landed the photographer instructed me to face away from him so that he could take some solo shots of me. This happened a lot throughout the first day so I didn’t think anything of it. When he asked me to turn around again Kal was on one knee.

I was in shock and couldn’t process what was happening. The first thing I managed to say when I composed myself was, “you tricked me!”
