Vanessa and Yi

Vanessa's Proposal in Our First Apartment

How We Met

We had the same group of friends our Junior and Senior year of high school but we never became close or even came close to having a real conversation! It all started before graduation in 2008. Yi sent around a piece of paper within our class for everyone to write down their instant message username so that he could keep in touch. I wrote mine down not thinking much. The day after graduation in June 2008 my family and I took a trip for 3 weeks to Portugal. Upon our return i logged into my email to check regarding college and Yi instant messaged me. We continued to talk throughout the summer and a little when we started our freshman year. I attended a small community college and he went to Rutgers University. We began to learn more about each other in the summer of 2009 and that year I transferred to Monmouth University. On October 8 2009, he asked me to be his girlfriend. We dated long distance for about a year until I transferred to his University my Junior year. After graduating college we moved in together into my parents’ home until May 2016 when we moved into our first apartment together. We are both still in school, Yi will be graduating with his Master’s in Accounting this May and I will be graduating as a Diagnostic Sonographer.

How He Asked

On December 21, 2017 I came home after having dinner with some of my classmates to find some instructions on our front door. I proceeded inside and continued to our living room only to find myself paralyzed in shock. Our Christmas tree lights were on but this time with a handmade sign spelling out “will you?” hanging from the branches. There were rose petals on the floor and on our coffee table, flickering candles formed into a heart along with two champagne glasses and champagne to match. Yi walks out and asks me to be his forever. I would not have it any other way and could not have imagined anything more fitting. We are planning a reception in Fall 2018 along with a month long backpacking honeymoon through Asia/Europe starting in New Zealand in 2019.
