Vanessa and Kal
How We Met
Bit embarrassing but Kal and I met on MySpace back when it was still popular! We are united by our love for music. Some of our fondest memories are of us rocking out at gigs together.
Kal was in the army when we first started talking. This was 10 years ago back when I was 18. We communicated primarily by posting on each other’s profiles and it was a few months before we met face to face. I complied all our posts and made them into a book. I presented him with it on one of our earlier anniversaries. I recently read through them again. We certainly had a strange and twisted sense of humour. Or should I say “have” because nothing much has changed!
Some people say relationships have a “honeymoon period” where everything is wonderful. If that’s the case we are still in that phase! Loving Kal is so sweet. It comes naturally to me, as easy as breathing. I still find myself gazing at him in wonder and I still can’t keep my hands off him. I’m so thankful he chose to love me and to spend his life with me. In return I vow to protect his heart and to never stop making him laugh. His laughter is one of my favourite sounds. Even if it’s at my expense!
How He Asked
Kal coordinated the proposal with Wing, our pre-wedding photographer very early on. A bit unusual but we were doing a pre-wedding shoot before he proposed because we had a tight timeline to work with since we wanted to capture some cherry blossoms in our photos. They were only in bloom for a limited period and we didn’t want to miss them. The photographer devised a plan to ask me to pose for a solo shot while Kal got the ring ready.
I designed the ring myself so that part wasn’t a surprise. The jeweller was in on it too. Before we left for Christchurch she told Kal to tell me the ring wasn’t ready yet. She even took pictures of it half done as evidence. I was so disappointed when I saw the photos. I told myself not to let this spoil my enjoyment of the trip. We were flying to New Zealand after all! How can one be bummed out surrounded by all that beauty?
Kal asked me to be his wife after a helicopter ride up one of the mountains in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The flight was exhilarating and drove all thought of the ring out of my mind. After touching down on the pristine powder Wing told me to face away from him while he took a few shots. When he asked me to turn around again I was so confused when I saw Kal kneeling in the snow. One of the first things I said to him was, “You tricked me!” I was so shocked that Wing’s wife who was helping to take behind-the-scenes shots had to remind me that I hadn’t said “Yes!” yet!
