Tuba and Dylan
How We Met
We met in California at a Spanish tapas bar. I was in my second year of teaching and he had just transferred to the state as a member of the US Coast Guard.
When we met, I had already begun the process to teach abroad in South Korea. We planned to break up before I left — neither of us thought it would be realistic to stay together. The day before I left we were both so, so sad. We made a last minute decision to stay together. For the next 10 months, we saw each other just once but we managed to stay together despite the distance. In June 2015, I moved out to Hawaii to be with him and try things out for real.
How He Asked
We hiked for a rainy 6.5 miles but the view was obscured by fog so then Dylan insisted we return to a viewpoint of the canyon for photos. I grumbled, “Don’t we have enough photos at the canyon? My hair is frizz city right now” but he managed to convince me anyway. A rainbow began to emerge and looked at it together, holding hands and leaning into one another. Suddenly Dylan let go of my hand and dropped onto one knee. It took me a second to understand what was happening!
