How we met

Trevor and I met four years ago at Weber State University when we were just wee babies! I was nineteen and he was twenty-two, and never in a million years would I have guessed things would play out in the way they have. We both had been accepted to go on a weeklong service trip to San Diego that was sponsored by the university. I remember the day I met him thinking to myself, “Mmm, he’s cute!” He had style AND an outgoing personality. Did I mention that he had those fake, hipster glasses that we all wore? I was such a sucker for those!

We spent quite a bit of time together in San Diego, but upon our return, we didn’t talk or see each other as much. We both were heavily involved in student government, so we had mutual friends and would see each other at our weekly collaborative meetings and between classes from time to time. We just didn’t talk as much as we both would have liked. I should also bring up the fact we were on COMPLETELY separate dating schedules. I swear, the minute he was single, I had a boyfriend and vise versa – typical, right?? Fast forward to graduation. I graduated one year prior to Trevor, and afterwards, we both fell off of each other’s radars. I was shocked when a year passed and I received a text from T inviting me to his graduation party. I was pleasantly surprised and agreed to be there.

When the day of the party came around, I was not feeling well. Dragging at work, exhausted, headache, etc. I remember coming home that afternoon and crashing the minute I could climb into bed. Needless to say, I had made the decision not to go to his party. After sleeping for a few hours, I woke up with a pit in my stomach. I was feeling guilty for committing to show at the party and for choosing to bail. I reluctantly rolled out of bed and attempted to make myself look presentable considering I looked like I had been hit by a bus. Smeared make up, crazy hair, sweatpants… Every guys’ fantasy, am I right?

I arrived at the party… two hours late like a champ. As I walked up I thought, “I’m just going to say my hellos and congratulations, so I can go crawl back into bed.” When Trevor saw me he came up and gave me the biggest hug. We chatted for a bit and then we went on to talk to other people. I made several attempts to leave, but every time Trevor would convince me to stay. Finally, after about four unplanned games of volleyball, I said my goodbyes and left.

I live with my sister, and I remember that she was home when I got back to the house. I had told her about the party and how it was good to see so many of my friends that I had been out of touch with the for the last year. I specifically remember mentioning to her that it was really good to see Trevor and that “I would date him in a heartbeat if he asked me out”. No more than five minutes later, I had a text pop up on my phone from Trevor explaining that he had “always had a crush on me” and that he wanted to take me out. I about hit the floor! Ask and ye shall receive people!

How He Asked

Trevor and I had gone ring shopping prior to the proposal. Knowing that he had the ring was pure torture!! Every time we would get together I would have one of my cutest outfits on, hair and makeup done, perfect nails… It was exhausting! Trevor would call me up and say things like, “Hey! Let’s go hang out with Cory and Emily (our good friends) tonight!” I would automatically think, “Sure, he thinks he is SO clever tricking me. He’s going to propose!” Then he would pick me up and we would go hang out with Cory and Emily… Anyway, that drug on for two weeks and I was losing patience by the hour!

It was a Friday morning, and Trevor texted me at work. He said, “Pack your bags, we are going on a trip for the weekend!” I knew then that it was happening within a day or two! Then next day we jumped on a plane to San Diego. I had a feeling we were going there before he told me, because that is the place where we had met and become friends.

When we arrived to San Diego, we decided to go to the beach. I remember on the car ride over, Trevor became unusually quiet. We parked the car and went out on the sand to walk along the water. I could tell Trevor was really in his head due to the fact that he was not engaging in my small talk, and was walking at a quicker pace than myself a few steps ahead of me. It was cute! I had a feeling he was going to propose, but I didn’t know if he was doing a fake-out, and I didn’t want to get my hopes up too high.

As we walked we came upon this man who had built a huge, gorgeous sandcastle. When we walked around to the front of it, I could see that there was a huge heart at the base of the castle with “I love you, Madison” written inside it’s borders. I turned to Trevor expecting him to be down on his knee or reaching in his pocket, but he just smiled and took me by the hand.

He led me back down by the water, where we found a blanket that had been laid out for us. As we stood there he told me he loved me, among many other very sweet things, and got down on one knee and proposed! It was like a dream!

After lots of hugs and kisses, Trevor pointed up the crowd that had gathered to watch, and among them were our good friends Cory and Emily (who I had mentioned earlier) running down towards us! They had captured pictures of the whole thing, and helped Trevor set up the proposal! It honestly was the happiest moment of my life to date. I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing and thoughtful proposal!
