Tom and Rachel

how we met

We met at our first job out of college. I moved to Baltimore from South Carolina and knew no one at all. He moved down to Baltimore from the University of Delaware, and lived with about five other friends. We met our first day on the job and became friends pretty quickly. We also realized we lived about a block from each other, so we would go out a lot together on the weekends. After about a year we started dating and the rest is history!

how he asked

A few months before he proposed Tom forwarded me an email one day from a colleague at his office inviting us to a weekend getaway in St. Michaels, MD to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. The invitation was very formal with company letterhead at the top… clearly some effort had been put into preparing it. I didn’t think anything about it, until about a week before the trip when I asked Tom if there was an itinerary so I knew what to pack. The next day I received another forwarded email from the same colleague with a detailed agenda of things to do for the weekend. On the list were – welcome cocktail reception, dinner in town one evening, recreational activities during the day, etc. We arrived, put our bags in the room, and headed down to the lawn for the “welcome cocktail reception.” I was a little confused when we got down there and no one was around, but then he asked me to marry him by the water, which is when I realized there was no company trip.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and afterwards we got to celebrate with an amazing dinner, delicious wine, and a whole weekend to enjoy by ourselves before getting home to start planning a wedding. It was the perfect weekend. And the staff at the Inn at Perry Cabin was exceptional. They made our stay so special!
