Alexandria and Todd
How We Met
Todd and I have known of each other for many years. He started out as a good friend of both of my older brothers, and he even witnessed my oldest sisters proposal over 10 years ago. Little did we both know that, when I grew up, (we’re 7 years apart) he would later ask my brother for approval to date me. Luckily, my brother gave him the stamp of approval.
We went out and immediately realized our connection was something special. Funny thing is, we ran into each other in New York City when he was living there right after I graduated High School. My mom recognized him and they had a nice 10 minute conversation.
I was standing right next to her but I think the only words we exchanged were “Hello”. We still talk about how funny that is and he hardly remembers seeing me! Flash forward to now and we’ve been dating almost two years! I’ve been living in a different state for the past 5 months and long distance is very hard, but we make the best of it.
How He Asked
I’ve know for a little while that he’s had my ring & I’ve been racking my brain for any possible moment he would pop the question. And let me tell you, he didn’t make it easy! We had a trip planned to New York City and I thought for sure he would pop the question.
What could be more romantic?! I was totally prepared and needless to say, it didn’t happen. So, a few weeks later I had a trip planned home for Thanksgiving. I didn’t want to get my hopes up again but I still wanted to be prepared, but at this point I wasn’t so stuck on it happening.
We had a few wonderful days hanging out with friends and family and enjoyed our favorite holiday. We actually hadn’t spent a thanksgiving together before! We were momentarily broken up during Thanksgiving last year, you know every couple goes through “that break”.
Anyway, the night before Thanksgiving was when things starting getting particularly fishy. His mom text me and said, “Girls day!” “We’re getting our nails done!” I knew from that moment it was coming, obviously. But with so many other times “I knew” it was happening, and It didn’t, I still wasn’t sure! After that, I hadn’t seen him all day and he said he was in work meetings.
Which I found odd, because on the day before thanksgiving I couldn’t imagine much would be going on. Finally, the last clue, we had a family movie planned and he didn’t show up. He said he had “things to do” but he would be there right after the movie is over to pick me up. So, I was prepared. After the movie he picked me up and said we’re going on a little date.
I was so ready in my mind, I couldn’t wait! He took me to dinner and we had wonderful hot chocolate by a beautiful fire place. After that we strolled among some stunning Christmas lights at one of our favorite spots. Still, he hadn’t popped the question! Later, he drove me up the canyon and we went for a scenic view.
This entire time I was prepared, and nothing! I was devastated when I got home & floored that he hadn’t asked me yet. I just let him know I was really tired and I wanted him to take me home, not letting him in on the fact that I was actually sad he didn’t propose.
I got home that night & went straight to bed. I was staying at my parents the entire week and that night I got woken up slightly a few times to someone in my room, but it wasn’t enough for me to get up, I assumed it was one of my siblings.
On top of that, I couldn’t fully fall asleep because I was so anxious! I finally woke up around 7:30 in the morning and strolled to my bathroom. In there someone had left the most stunning bouquet of red roses and a note.
I immediately opened it and it read to be ready at 10:00am and dress nice! He couldn’t make it any more obvious, it was HAPPENING. I got ready and was so excited for what was to come. When the time came, his sister came to the door to pick me up.
I was confused about this and wondered where we were going. In the car I questioned her a few times but knew she wasn’t budging. The whole ride my heart was beating so fast. When we got to the location, it was a vintage type warehouse and it wasn’t a place that I recognized. We walked through a door and came to a staircase. She told me this is where we parted and to walk up the staircase.
At that moment, I was in shock. I took my first step and my heart started pounding and racing faster.
When I made it to the top, I came upon the most beautiful, open, vintage room, with candles lit all around, and an amazingly decorated white table filled with flowers, a picture of us, sparkling cider, more candles, and my handsome soon to be fiancé standing right there.
I waked over to him and I couldn’t believe that it was actually happening. He exchanged some romantic words and grabbed my hands. He was shaking uncontrollably and getting teary eyed. I started getting teary eyed and I was just floored with the beauty of everything. He kneeled down and asked me to marry him.
Never have I heard my name spoken in that beautiful of context. I said “yes!”, so excitedly and hugged him, kissed him, you know everything that you do when you just get ENGAGED.
We had an amazing time just taking everything in and calming down from the excitement of it all.
He opened the sparking cider and we toasted to many things, although I can’t remember a single one now.
I only remember how I felt, and the emotions that were exchanged between the two of us.
I love him even more than I did the day before, and just when I think we can’t love each other any more than we do, I get a pleasant surprise that we fall in love more and more everyday.
