Tierra and Calvin
How We Met: Calvin and I met when I was in the eight grade! We went to the same school and he was a little older than me. I would speak to him occasionally and we were cordial but I never let him know I had a crush on him. ;-). Calvin ended up going to a different school and a few years later we saw each other again at a Beyoncé concert. He did not recognize me but I recognized him. We began dating and we were inseparable. We momentarily went our separate ways during college but we reunited after college and the rest is history :-). The photo below is from prom my junior year.
How He Asked: Calvin and I were going on a seven day cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Weeks before we left, my supervisor kept telling me that I was going to get engaged because we had previously gone ring shopping and I told her about it. She just KNEW we were getting engaged but I constantly denied it. We decided to go on a parasailing excursion that we booked with the cruise ship. Our parasailing excursion was running late and I was not very happy because I wanted to do some shopping at the port.
We were on a limited time schedule since we had to be back on the ship by a certain time. While we were waiting for the parasailing excursion to depart, Calvin befriended two young ladies Rosie and Maria. We were all casually talking about things we had in common. We started making our way to the boat to begin our parasailing adventure. Much to my dismay, the cruise overbooked the excursion and we were delayed another 30 minutes. At this point my shopping dreams were drifting farther and farther away (I really love to shop).
Any how, we get on this very slow boat that gave me incredible motion sickness. The slow boat was taking us to the speed boat for our excursion. As we meet up with the speed boat in the middle of the sea, we had to transfer from our boat to the speed boat. Additionally, the people on the speed boat had to move to our slow boat. It was quite an adventure. One elderly woman lost her balance and grabbed the throttle TWICE! I just knew I was going to die. At this point, I was so frustrated! But we finally made it to our boat and started preparing to depart.
I was so nervous as this was my first time parasailing. I was so focused on making sure I was being hooked in properly that I wasn’t looking at Calvin. I don’t know what he said but all I saw was the ring and I immediately burst into tears.
A marriage proposal was the farthest thing from my mind at that moment. I am so thankful that he befriended Rosie and Maria because they helped him pull it off and capture it on video.
Calvin has been in my life for so long and I can’t imagine life without him. He is my best friend and life partner. Can’t wait until next year! #TheLoveBoat #MeetTheMackies16
