Tiara and Derrick
How We Met
Derrick and I went to the same high school, we knew of each other or freshman year but didn’t meet until our sophomore year. We both signed up to be Outdoor School leaders and ended up on the same week at the same site! His quirky personality and ability to make anyone like him instantly made us friends. After our week at Outdoor School we only talked every now and then, short hellos as we passed each other in the hallways. Our junior year came around and our friendship had progressed a little, we hung out once outside of school our junior and I think that’s when I kinda of had a feeling there might be something there. The summer of our junior year going into our senior year Derrick invited me to go camping with his dad, brother, and some friends of ours from school. It was the most fun camping experience I think I’ve ever had, a few months after the trip we all planned a second one and it was then I was certain this is the guy I want to be with. I told a close friend of mine that was camping with us how I felt and she said I needed to tell him, I wasn’t very good with confronting things at the time so when I asked if we could get some food and talk I completely brushed off the subject and pretended like I forgot what I was going to tell him.
That night when I was at home feeling dumb I decided to send a 9 page text to him about what I was feeling, and of course it got completely jumbled so I had to re-type in a Facebook message so that he was able to get what I was saying. He was of course at a loss for words because who expects some chick to tell you that she likes for all these different reasons, and because a superstitious happening also helped her realize her feelings. A few days later was registration for our senior year, a few of us met up at the school and hung out afterwards. I thought Derrick had gotten the picture so I was standing really close to him and leaning on him and things of those sorts but he kept shrugging away like he was unsure. Come to find out from a friend of his that Derrick didn’t believe everything I had told him when I spilled my heart out, he didn’t believe that girl he had liked for the past 3 years suddenly likes him too. It took him until the 2nd week of school to finally ask me out, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.
How He Asked
We went to high school together, Derrick had his eye on me for quite some time and always had a feeling I was the one, but it took me a little while to see he was the one too. When I finally realized what I had in front of me it was almost too good to be true! We started dating our senior year of high school and from there it was history! On Saturday September 6th, 2016, Derrick and I went for a hike up to Munra Point in the Columbia Gorge in Oregon where we live. I thought this was just going to be like any other day and any other hike, ending with a beautiful view up top. What I didn’t know, was that I picked out a pretty sketchy hike with surprises the whole way up. If it wasn’t extreme rock climbing, than it was steep drops offs on either side of us, all I thought was that it was going to be a fun and nice hike.
Once we reached the top (without soiling ourselves, surprisingly) we could only stay so long because the path was as narrow as a foot width wide and wasn’t the most comfortable place to stop for lunch. So we walked back down until we found a little side trail that had some stable, wider ground to sit on with a pretty good view. We ate, drank a Widmer Hefe to celebrate the accomplishment of not dying, and admired the view for awhile.
A few minutes later Derrick looks over and says he’s nervous and then says he has something to ask, I of course not having any idea what he’s going to ask, and thinking he’s just nervous from all of the moments we could’ve fallen, was blindsided when he turned to me with the most beautiful ring and sputtered out the words “will you marry me?” After the hardest hike we had ever endured, asking at the top was only confirmation that we were in it for the long run no matter what challenges we may face.
