Thomas and Kelly's Sunflower Proposal
How we met: Thomas and I first met once without meaning to. I was visiting Atlanta while on break from school in Brooklyn, NY. Thomas was visiting Atlanta on vacation from the United States Marine Corps. Our mutual friend, Josh, called us both out to a lounge to catch up and we met and said hello but it was very brief and I didn’t really think much of it. (He swears that he remembers thinking that I was cute, but let’s be real, his memory doesn’t have a good reputation.) After I got back to NY, we kept in touch via Facebook, occasionally messaging, each time promising to let each other know when our next visit to Atlanta was so that we could hang out. Timing wasn’t on our side, but we somehow got to BBM-ing (high five if you know what that is), which led to talking on the phone. We really connected and what I swore wasn’t going to happen, happened. I was hooked. He was funny, witty, and such a good listener (still is!) and he was so easy to talk to; it just felt right. After finishing the last semester in college, I happily moved back to Atlanta where Thomas was waiting for me. I’m so lucky to have found my best friend and love in one person.
How he asked: I’m one of the lucky ones to be able to say that I had no idea what was coming. We had a tradition – dinner at Canoe each year to celebrate our anniversary. This year was our 4th year together, but when our anniversary came around, we were both busy and decided to have dinner another time. After rescheduling dinner a couple times, we just decided we’d skip it this year. A couple weeks later, Thomas’ brother’s girlfriend (soon to be sister-in-law), Vivian invited me to a small dinner to celebrate her upcoming birthday. When she said she wanted to try Canoe for the first time, I was a little sad since Thomas and I didn’t get to go together, but gladly agreed.
When we got to the restaurant, the hostess held out something towards me. After a moment, I realized it was a laptop case. I still didn’t have a clue! I thought she mistook me for the birthday girl and turned away, but she insisted. Then, I thought, “oh wow, he got me a laptop for our anniversary gift!” It was such a thoughtful gift, since I had been trying to save up for one for a long time for work. Tears came to my eyes while watching a slideshow of us that Thomas made and put on the laptop screen! But I was snapped back to reality by my sister-in-law when she laughed and said, “Can we go celebrate my birthday now?” My mind reset and I was back to focusing on the dinner… until we went to walk around in the garden out back.
The waiters opened the door for me and I saw a row of sunflowers floating in the garden. I froze again. Sunflowers are my favorite flower and there was a whole row! I slowly felt the blood rush to my face, and as I got a little closer, I realized our friends were standing in a row, each holding one big sunflower.
I laughed, I cried, I yelled out “oh my gosh!”… I was so so happy to see each one of them, it was a flow of emotions that I’d never felt before. I walked down, collecting the sunflowers one by one, and when I turned the corner, I saw Thomas waiting for me. The proposal was beyond anything I had imagined and a complete surprise. When Thomas started kneeling, I didn’t know what to do but cry. I cried like a baby in Thomas’ arms and it was the happiest moment ever.
