The Lumineers "Ho Hey" Proposal Serenade

Marshall and I met about 2 years when he began working at Legacy Church. We were introduced to one another through a mutual friend at one of our now favorite Asian restaurants, Mei Mei China. I thought he was obviously so cute but his intentions were strictly platonic. Sad day for me, but little did I know that God had bigger plans in mind.

I had a huge crush. I’ll admit it. But I knew Marshall wasn’t really interested so I went about my own life 200 miles away in College Station working towards my communications degree.

Marshall worked closely with my mother at Legacy Church and she noticed many of our similarities. It was then that she started dropping my name subtlety into their conversations and finding excuses to bring me up. She would then call me and give me ALL of the details. I guess you could say my mom and I were scheming to get Marshall to ask me out. Even the slightest things gave me hope that he could be interested. I knew we would be PERFECT if he’d just make a move.

Marshall started catching onto the hints (which is an inside joke to us now, she wasn’t as subtle as she thought) and invited himself over for dinner. I was nervous beyond belief and it didn’t help that my pupils were insanely dilated from my eye appointment earlier in the day. We ended up having an incredible night consisting of salmon patties, lots of laughing and an exchange of cellphone numbers.

June 23rd, 2012 we went on our first date. The night couldn’t have been more perfect. We ate at a new Mexican spot in Plano and watched the sunset on the restaurant’s roof.

The next 365 days we spent with 200 miles between us. Long distance isn’t fun, but we made trips as often as we could. The distance gave Marshall and I the opportunity to truly get to know one another inside and out. It forced us to communicate and allowed us to open up in ways we never had before. I fell for him fast and hard. Here was this incredible man of God who made me laugh, who respected me, who challenged me daily and HE was pursuing ME. Marshall absolutely stole my heart and I knew I wasn’t getting it back anytime soon.

June 23, 2013 was the day Marshall got down on one knee. This was a complete surprise to me. I had no idea Marshall had even looked at rings, let alone bought mine two months prior. Marshall is incredibly romantic. His gestures, gifts and surprises always leave me speechless. He of all people would NEVER propose on our one year anniversary, it was too cliché for his style. The “cliché-ness” of it all made it that much more of a surprise. He took me to the restaurant we had our first date at, sang our song “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers, then proposed. After that, Marshall had arranged an engagement party – yet another surprise! It was so perfect.

I’m young. And I know people don’t understand our rush into getting married. But when you find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. I can’t wait to marry my best friend!
