Taylor and Marc

How We Met

If you ask either of us, we will both tell you that we weren’t looking to meet our future husband/wife at a bar in downtown Birmingham, but things happen, and life is crazy. Marc and I met on July 9th, 2016 at a friend’s birthday party. We had all met at a mutual friend’s house to celebrate the night of the party. I had gotten there pretty early, but Marc ended up walking in late from a day at the pool with some friends. Before this day, I had never met Marc. So, when he walked in, I didn’t even realize it.

Rumor has it that as soon as he walked in and walked up to his buddies, he saw me across the room and he asked about me, but never spoke to me. Later in the evening, the birthday party moved downtown to a local bar. When we first arrived, I had walked outside on the patio with a friend to where Marc was hanging out. I would find out later, that he was working up the nerve to finally talk to me. Eventually, he came up to me, and the first thing he said was, “Apple cider, eh?”, referring to my drink…Who knew such a cheesy ice breaker would lead to a future together. I gave him the hardest time that night and did not give him the time of day. Throughout the night, I finally realized he was sweet and charming, and really cute! We ended up talking, dancing with our friends, and we made plans for Marc to take me on a tour of the local university, since I was about to begin my first semester there. When I decided it was time for me to go, Marc questioned why I was heading out so soon. I told him that I was going to church in the morning with my family, and I that couldn’t stay out any later. When he heard this, he decided that he needed to head home too.

He still says that this moment was how he knew I was “it”, and he was hooked. A couple of our friends still take credit for setting us up that night and they say they knew that we would end up together one day….I guess he won me over that night with his killer dance moves and his dad jokes.

How He Asked

The weekend of the proposal was full of lots of plans and so many emotions. Marc and I got engaged on April 30th, 2017, which also happened to be my 22nd birthday. It. Was. Crazy. The original plan for my birthday weekend was to help my older sister and my brother-in-law move into their new house. So, most of the weekend was spent going back and forth, unloading things at their new house.

On Saturday, my mom, younger sister, and I headed over to the new house again to help with unpacking and organizing. We spent the whole day unpacking while Marc played in a golf tournament for the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s dental school. The next day, April 30th, Marc knew I didn’t really want to do much for my birthday, so he had planned a quiet little romantic picnic lunch for us at Railroad Park with all our favorite foods and he told me that we would celebrate later that night with my family and a few friends. He was rushing me out the door and kept saying “we had an appointment at 12” which didn’t make any sense because we were just eating lunch in the park.

At this point, I still didn’t suspect anything, but the “appointment”, was the time Marc told the photographer we would be at the park. If anyone knows me though, they would know that we definitely didn’t make it to the park by 12…which caused Marc to become even more flustered and stressed than before. In hindsight, the signs were obvious, but I was completely oblivious to the fact that later that day I would be a fiance! After we got to the park and unloaded the picnic blanket and the picnic basket, I thought we were about to start eating our lunch, but Marc got up really quickly and said, “I’ll be right back”. He walked toward his car like he was going to get something out of it, and it took him a little while.

At this point, I had noticed the photographer, but she was taking pictures of what looked like her husband (who was Marc’s co-worker that I had never met) and son, so I thought nothing about it. A few minutes later, I saw Marc coming towards me with the cutest fluffiest, little golden doodle puppy in the sweetest little plaid bowtie. I was in complete shock. Marc knew how long I had been wanting a puppy of my own (basically since forever), and now here he was. I was so happy and excited and overwhelmed. I looked up at Marc and I said “Is he mine?”.

Marc just laughed and I couldn’t believe it. I was so starstruck by the little puppy and I was thinking that this was the best birthday I had ever had. I couldn’t ever expect anything else to happen in that moment. But then, Marc handed the puppy to me. I reached under the his neck and I felt the ring inside of the bowtie and I immediately knew what was happening. I looked at Marc and I stupidly asked, “What is that?”. Then, he got down on one knee, and through tears from both sides, he told me some really sweet things that I can hardly remember, and he asked me to marry him.

I obviously said yes, because who can say no to both a puppy and a ring?! ;) After we took a few pictures with the photographer, we packed up our uneaten picnic lunch and headed to a local brewery where all of our family and friends were waiting for a surprise birthday and engagement party. I was so in shock at all the surprises. It was the best day of my entire life, and I will never forget it!
