Taylor and Austin
How We Met: Austin and I met on his 19th birthday at his fraternity’s annual crawfish boil. One of my best friends called me and told me to come out to the crawfish boil at Sig Ep to hangout. I was familiar with the fraternity and the guys in it but I didn’t know Austin. I had gotten out of a less than wonderful long term relationship a few months prior to this and had sworn off boys entirely. When I went to the party that day I had no intention of meeting a potential boyfriend let alone my future husband.
Once I arrived Mackenzie and I were chatting and I remember her saying she wanted me to meet some guy she called Cantwell. I figured I had nothing to lose and went along with her as she went to find him at the party. The rest of the night is a blur to me! I remember we met and I was immediately taken by how handsome he was. I also remember that we both decided to follow each other on Twitter (LOL) and I have this memory of us sitting on the roof of the fraternity house talking and getting to know each other.
I also recall asking him to take a picture on my phone and he used that as an opportunity to take selfies (Total Austin Move). We parted ways after the party and I wasn’t sure if anything would ever come of it. Sure enough he added me on Facebook and after that we ran into each other out on Northgate. He didn’t even get my number until we saw each other again at Chilifest (a country music festival in Snook, Texas)! The rest is history. :)
How He Asked: I look back on our proposal and I still can’t believe it was real. The entire weekend was a total dream and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world! Austin surprised me with a weekend getaway to Austin, Texas where he rented the cutest little place called the Comal Cabin on Airbnb. We drove to town from Houston Friday morning and kicked off our trip by exploring South Congress and eating yummy food. Later that afternoon we checked into the darling cabin and relaxed before heading to dinner that night.
Austin took me to my favorite restaurant in Austin called Moonshine so I was in heaven from the start. I think we finished dinner around 8 and once the valet brought the car around we hopped right in. Austin mentioned needing to stop and get gas but I didn’t think anything of it. Little did I know he had our best friends at the cabin setting up for my dream proposal. He provided all the supplies and when we headed out for dinner earlier that evening they were showing up at the house.
Our friend Aaron even brought his GoPro to set up and film the whole thing secretly in a planter. I had left my Nikon camera sitting out on the kitchen table which our friends then used to take pictures of our special night. Once Austin got gas we began the drive back to the cabin. As Austin unlocked the front door I could hear Joshua Radin’s “I’d Rather Be With You” playing softly in the background. The cabin has a row of sliding glass doors leading out to the patio so I immediately saw what was waiting for me outside. Our favorite songs playing, candles lit, and pictures of our entire relationship hung everywhere I could see.
I opened the door to step onto the patio and immediately lost it. If you know me you would know I am not a very emotional person and I could not stop the tears from rolling down my face.
I was completely overcome with joy! Austin just smiled and held me as I kept saying “OMG, OMG, OMG” between sobs. I remember walking around to the other side of the table in the backyard to look at the rest of the pictures and then “Witchcraft” by Frank Sinatra started to play.
Austin then walked me around to the front of the table (he was looking for his marker so that the proposal would be on camera) and then got down on one knee.
All I remember is him saying, “Taylor Demski I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” To which I responded, “YES!” Pretty sure I was in a state of pure bliss for the beginning half of the speech and blacked out. I think I was in shock over the fact I get to spend forever with him and blown away that he planned the most Pinterest worthy proposal.
The obvious thing to celebrate spending forever together was to celebrate with champagne. Soon after this moment I kept seeing this white light blink and realized our friends were behind the fence hiding out and taking pictures. They then came out of hiding to celebrate with us. It was truly the most perfect night that I will never forget. I’m so elated to be marrying my best friend and I can hardly wait to be a Cantwell!
