Tamar and Matthew
How We Met
Matt and I first met when we went to the same church youth group in 2009! We didn’t really become close until we both went on a retreat with the youth group in 2011, and we have been inseparable ever since. I was 16 and he was 17, and now I’m 21 and he’s 22, so we’ve been able to go through college and university by each other’s side, mature and grow together and enter into adulthood together, too!
He’s my best friend, the most humble, caring, giving, loving, loyal and gracious man i have ever had the privilege to meet, and i am forever grateful for his presence in my life. After six months of dating, we told each other that one day we would be married, because we both just knew how great our relationship was and how strong we are together even then. Here we are 4 years later, engaged and planning our lives together. We make such a great team, and I am so blessed to be able to spend the rest of my life with him!
How He Asked
I go to university in Birmingham and he lives around an hour way from there in our home town. One week we were planning when we were going to see each other, and he suggested i come back to Staffordshire so that we could go hiking (which is one of our favourite activities to do together since we live so close to the Peak District!) So i drove back from Birmingham and picked Matt and my puppy on the way, and we headed to the Roaches.
I could tell there was something on his mind and asked him multiple times if something was wrong – he assured me he was fine and just tired!! (he was so nervous about proposing but of course i had no idea) so we started our hike, and we walked up to one of the highest points in the Roaches.
There, he told me he’d brought alone a tripod so that we could take a photograph together on top of the peak! I though it was a bit out of character for him (it would usually be me trying to get him to have a photo taken with me, not the other way around!) but i love documenting our time together so i agreed. he set the camera up and then came back to stand by me, telling me he had put the camera on a 10 second timer.
After a while, the camera hadn’t gone off to i turned to look at Matt, and he just got down on one knee and proposed!! i was so shocked, but so incredibly happy! (turns out he’d filmed the whole thing). It was such a beautiful moment that we will both treasure forever.
