Talya and Jason
How We Met: Jason and I met in Lynchburg, Virginia in 2012 when I was visiting high school friends who were his college friends. We were both wanting to go into the profession of physical therapy, and I started “crushing” on him when he told me his visions of doing physical therapy both stateside and with sister clinics in third-world countries someday. Well, this random guy from Indiana (Jason) and redhead from Minnesota (me) became Facebook friends but nothing more.
Fast-forward a year and a half to 2014 when we were unexpectedly reacquainted in Pennsylvania, as we were both in our friends’ wedding. The wedding party somehow managed to convince us to “fake date” for the weekend, so we rolled with it and planned our whole wedding and lives together (COMPLETELY as a joke). We never stopped talking, though distance separated us, and ended up “real dating” 5 months later! Here we are, a year and a half since then, both finishing up our doctorate degrees in physical therapy (I’m in Grand Forks, North Dakota and Jason is in Lynchburg, Virginia) and living out the very plans we made before we even started dating!
How He Asked: We had never said ‘I love you,’ but we had always been in love. When he took me back to where we had our first date, I was sure it was coming. He threw me for a loop when the date ended with sparkly sets of love-struck eyes, but no signs of a sparkly ring. Thinking the date was over, I proceeded to take a nap, dreaming of our future and content with life. When I woke up, I was shocked to find that the date hadn’t ended–it was only beginning.
I was led down to the river behind my childhood home, where our pontoon was decked out with lights, flowers, and candles. The river waters were perfectly still, but my heart was racing. Coffee and cheesecake were served, the sun set, and the time came.
He pulled me close, told me ‘I love you’ for the very first time, and got down on one knee. My entire family was waiting on the dock when we pulled into shore, and they even threw a surprise engagement party for us that evening! We haven’t been able to stop saying those 3 life-changing words since!
