How We Met

We were first introduced by a mutual friend. It wasn’t long before I realized that Ryan and I share the same passion for life and travel.

How He Asked

We had planned a trip to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada to cross seeing the Aurora Borealis off our bucket list. We arrived on Christmas Day 2016, but being that the sky was so overcast, we couldn’t see anything with our bare eyes. Disappointed, we went back to our hotel. The next day, December 26, 2016, marked our anniversary. We drove up north with our tour group and set up our canon camera on the tripod and hoped for the best. Temperatures were in the negatives but the skies were clear, so we won half the battle. Timing is key with the viewing the Aurora. You never know when it will show up and how long it will show for. After photographing the stars for a bit and playing around with the camera settings, I started to get cold so I went into the heated cabin to sit by the fire while Ryan stayed outside to shoot around.

While inside, I saw the tour guides brewing fresh Canadian coffee so I thought I’d bring Ryan some hot coffee (since he’s an avid coffee lover. ) I walked outside and he was standing in front of the camera with one of the tour guides taking some test shots of him. Right as I was walking, I saw the aurora band show up behind him and it got brighter and brighter! I gave Ryan his coffee and told him to turn around with excitement!!!! I couldn’t take my eyes off of it! I’ve always only seen it on TV and online and it has always been my wish to see it in person!!! I didn’t even know what Ryan was doing at the time. I just saw that he ran back to the camera so I thought he was trying to take some pictures of the Aurora but when he came back to me, he grabbed my hand and got down on one knee…. I was STUNNED!!!

He told me, “honey, to this day I still can’t believe how we came together, and how lucky I am that you came into my life. I’m so lucky to be with such a beautiful, intelligent, funny, loving, caring, thoughtful, trustworthy, and all around just an amazing and incredible person. Since the day we got together, it’s been the happiest of my life, and since the very first day, our feelings and love for each other have grown each day and will continue to grow. You make me so happy, I love you so much and I want to spend forever with you. Baby, will you be my wife?” As I bent over to kiss him, I said, “Yes, of course!!”

Susan's Proposal in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

It was amazing. Everything fell together so perfectly ! It’s virtually impossible to plan everything in an Aurora Borealis proposal! It’s just so uncanny how everything came together, piece by piece. Had I not gone outside to give Ryan his coffee, we could have missed the aurora and the perfect opportunity to get engaged. It has not yet hit me that I am engaged! I’m still very stunned at how everything transpired. I don’t know how I got to be so lucky!!! I have my dream guy, and now my dream ring and dream proposal. I am beyond ecstatic and can’t wait to start our lives together as husband and wife!
