YouTuber's Surprise Proposal on the Beach
How we met – by Nathan: Rose and I both attended the University of Kansas, and lived in the same dorm. At the beginning of my sophomore year, and her freshman year, we were hanging out together in the dorm room of a mutual friend, and sitting down to watch a movie. I had ordered pizza before these plans had started, and when the pizza arrived, I chose to abandon the group, eat it in my room alone, and go to bed. The entire next day I was kicking myself for not hanging out and getting to know Rose better.
For the rest of that entire school year, I would see her sitting on the front steps of our building waiting for the bus, or I would see her in the dining hall. I never had the guts to go and talk to her, it always seemed like I had lost my chance after leaving that autumn night.
Fast forward to the end of the school year. It is spring and classes are just days from ending. I had gone on a walk alone late one evening and was just arriving back to my building when I saw my friend Peter, who asked if I wanted to do something exciting. Apparently some friends of his had just climbed on top of our dining hall to see the view across campus. He was about to join them and was wondering if I wanted to join. I didn’t, having just come home from a walk, and probably ready to lay around watching Netflix. I figured I would at least see if I knew anyone else who was up there, so I asked. He listed off several people whose names I didn’t recognize, but in the mix the name ‘Rose’ came.
Having felt like I had creepily watched her from a distance all year, I knew this would be my last chance to actually meet her before classes ended and I moved out of the dorms, possibly to never see her again. So I climbed on the roof with Peter, and eventually introduced myself to Rose.
In the days that followed, we began hanging out often, and when we moved out of the dorms just a couple weeks later, we began hanging out every single day, quickly becoming best friends. One night in the middle of that same summer, we had just left a party together, and even though I had never got any kind of flirtatious feelings from her, I took a huge risk and kissed her. We started dating that night and have now been together for five years, and ARE ENGAGED!
Moral of the story, don’t be afraid to do new things. You never know who you will meet. Maybe even your soulmate!
How he asked – by Rose: It was our second day in California on our five year anniversary of dating. Nathan and I were there vacationing with his family, but also to attend the annual YouTube convention VidCon. We went to Huntington Beach on a day that provided us gorgeous weather for Nathan’s first time viewing the Pacific Ocean. While his family relaxed in the sun, Nathan and I walked up and down the beach like some cheesy romantic comedy stereotype but it was beautiful and we loved it. I suppose that’s why it’s a stereotype, because it’s actually one that’s true and enjoyable.
We had stopped briefly back at his family’s post when Nathan asked if I’d like to go on another walk. It was about noon and the weather was still perfect and the beach seemed endless. As we were walking we talked about our relationship and its growth over the past five years and how we’d each become a part of each other’s families. That’s when Nathan said that he felt the dynamic of our relationship needed to change. I was confused for a moment, and then he turned me to face him and got down on one knee.
The waves gently touched his knee and my feet as he pulled the ring case out of his swimming trunks. He opened the velvet box to reveal the most sparkly diamond ring I’ve ever seen. He smiled that cute, big smile I’ve always loved and asked, “Rose, will you marry me?”
“Yes!” I said as we both laughed and beamed, full of bubbly adrenaline, and he slid the ring onto my finger. He stood up and we kissed and hugged and I couldn’t stop smiling. I mean, being proposed to on the beach, on our five year anniversary? I couldn’t ask for a more perfect proposal. And I can’t wait to spend a wonderful lifetime with my best friend.
