This Surprise Carousel Proposal Is Almost Too Romantic for Words
It’s no secret that we love celebrating love with heartwarming proposals. So when Edwin reached out to us looking for help surprising his girlfriend Priscila with a proposal to remember, of course we said yes. She’d stood by him throughout his mother’s fight with cancer and he wanted to make his proposal extra special. “Although my mom is no longer with me I know I must do all the best for my lady,” he shared.
We helped Edwin pull off a romantic, private proposal in Brooklyn, NY, where the couple lives, surrounded by Priscila’s favorite flowers and a view of the New York City skyline. Below, read their touching love story in their own words.
How We Met
From Edwin: In 2016 I was told by my doctors that I needed to go on a diet and exercise program because my health wasn’t so great. Little did I know my now-fiance Priscila would be the one signing me up [at the gym]. I thought she was pretty, but my focus was to improve my health. For the next six months I would see her from afar as I worked out, hoping she wouldn’t catch me eyeing her. Then one day in June I worked up the confidence to ask her if she had seen Captain America yet. We began to talk more and one Saturday I stayed at the gym until it closed just talking to her.
On June 25th, we went out on a date to the movies. I wanted to kiss her at the end of the night but I was raised differently and well, didn’t. I guess she left disappointed, but I felt in my heart and mind that I had to ask her if I could kiss her because that’s the way it was back in the old days.
Within six months of dating, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Priscila was so highly involved and spent countless days and nights in the hospital. Even during my mom’s difficult moments she always smiled at us. Her last wish was for us to get married; she said it in front of us. I cried because I knew in that moment my mom had given us her blessing.
How He Asked
From Priscila: I had a gut feeling all week that he was going to propose. I didn’t know how or in what way, or that it was going to be this huge production. He was always very sure of making it a complete surprise.
We went to dinner at Giando on the Water in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and I figured it would happen right after or during dessert. It didn’t. But towards the end of dinner he told me we had to go to Jane’s Carousel in Dumbo, Brooklyn, for an event because our family happened to be there.
After we parked and started walking towards the carousel, I didn’t see anyone there besides photographers. I thought it was very strange, but it honestly didn’t occur to me what was about to happen. Then I heard the song “Unless It’s With You” by Christina Aguilera and saw photographers and a set up of flowers and candles. When I realized what was going on, I noticed they were taking pictures of me.
Edwin reached for a sunflower that held the ring inside, and when he got on one knee I began to cry. I’m not big on surprises, and I got so nervous that I actually said “No,” and started pulling Edwin away. I don’t remember anything of what he said. I’m sure it was beautiful, but I was so in shock and in awe of what was happening that the only thing I remember is him holding my hands and getting down on one knee to ask me to marry him.
I said yes, and then started seeing both our families coming in with sunflowers, my favorite flower. I think that was the best part: him asking me and having both our families present was more important to us than anything else. I was so in shock that everyone was able to keep such a big secret from me that I didn’t know how to act!
