Stephen and Cobie
How We Met
About 5 years ago, I decided that I wanted my university experience to be a cultural experience too. I moved cross-country, to a city I had never been to before, to live with people I had never met before. My first week in my new city, my roommate hosted a dinner party. She cooked up a huge feast, and invited some people over for a home cooked meal. Friends started to arrive, one of which was her cousin who had also only just moved to the city and didn’t know anybody either— that was Stephen! When he walked in the room, I immediately got butterflies. He looked so cool! And handsome! And he was funny! As the night went on we got to talking, and laughing (he had a great sense of humour), and we clicked immediately.
Shortly after that night he thought he’d like to get to know me more, and asked me to hang out — he claims as friends, but… I had a stupid boyfriend back home — so, knowing I would fall deeply in love with him if we spent any more time together, I declined. Soon, when that relationship inevitably ended, I finally confessed to my roommate that I had been holding a candle for her cousin for quite a while. Of course she immediately passed this onto him. Next thing I knew, we had our first date, and we have been inseparable ever since! From setting up a tent in our living room (complete with stick-on stars on the ceiling) to a white table cloth dinner at 2am when I got home from work, he has always been full of surprises.
How He Asked
It was late on a Saturday night (or more realistically Sunday morning) and I was just finishing my shift at work. I’m a manager at a local restaurant on the waterfront so my job can make for some really late nights once everyone finally leaves and I close down the place. Stephen had let me know earlier that he was doing a photoshoot with his business partner Mike for their new company. Because he’s an absolute sweetheart, Stephen usually picks me up from work (even on such late nights) so I messaged him to let him know I was finally finished. He told me that he and Mike had gotten caught up shooting and were actually still working on the waterfront, not far from the restaurant. He sent me a pin of his location and I started to walk in that direction.
I started walking down the boardwalk towards his location and I started to see string lights and candles all around the gazebo that’s on the waterfront.
As I got closer, I thought, “what kind of photoshoot is this?” At this point music started to play, and I saw Stephen in the middle of it all standing there surrounded by candles and flowers.
I dropped my bags and walked towards him and he took my hands into his, kissed me on the cheek and told me, “Cobie, I love you.”
As he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, I (excitedly) barely let him ask the question before I interrupted — “of course!”
We stood there in the moonlight, kissing and dancing, at 5:00 in the morning. We spent the last of the night driving around, holding hands until the sun came up. I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with this amazing man!
