Stephanie and Doug
How We Met
I am a huge football fan and participated in a fantasy football league with friends. While watching football at a local bar one Sunday, Doug noticed I was checking my team. He asked me about my team and we chatted about football for a while. We realized we knew some mutual people and continued to chat. We left that day and continue to run into each other for many Sundays after that. A little over a year later, and numerous run-ins later, we ran into each other on the street. We talked for a while and discussed his birthday that just passed the weekend before. The exchanged numbers and texted every day for the following week. The next weekend, Halloween, we ran into each other at another local bar, and we spent the night hanging out together. We decided we wanted to go on a date a few weeks later, and the rest is history!
How He Asked
How we met and how we got engaged both involved sports. While sitting at a bar watching football 4 years ago, this guy noticed I was checking on my fantasy team while enjoying the company of a few friends. He decided to strike up a conversation with me about football and my team. We talked for a while the Sunday, and then we proceeded to see each other on the Sundays following at the same bar. We kept a friendship for a year until one day I decided I wanted to get to know him a little better. Doug and I went on a date and instantly realized we should have been doing this all along. By our third date, I mentioned to my friend “I am going to marry him!”
Fast forward 2.5 years, and we go to Rhode Island so I can run a half marathon. I run them often, and travel for them often, so this wasn’t a special trip of any kind. It was a beautiful day in Newport on April 15. I was running and finishing the race at a great speed and felt great! As I approach the finish line, the photographer tells me to look to the right, and I was so confused because there were no spectators on that side. As I look over to my right, I notice Doug standing there with a blue sign in his hands. I read it and looked at him and then read it again. It took me a few seconds to register that the “marry me” sign was being held up for me!
I cried and we hugged and then I looked to my left to the people cheering and found that his sister and her kids were there watching and taking pictures and videos of the whole thing! I had no idea they were even in Rhode Island! As I turned back to Doug, he was on his knee with the most beautiful ring in his hand. I immediately said yes and laughed that the ring wouldn’t fit my now swollen finger! We celebrated with a delicious dinner at a fabulous place later that day. I could not have asked for a better way to begin my forever with the love of my life!
