Stefan and Anuschka
How We Met
Growing up in a world where anything goes, I went from one failed relationship to another, often lasting no longer than the dreaded 3-month mark. I eventually started to think there was something wrong with me, something I needed to change.
However, I knew that God had someone amazing waiting for me and I was determined to find him while keeping my morals and standards high.
The moment I surrendered my love-life to God He reminded me that He would soften the right heart at the right time so that I could enjoy a God-honouring relationship. He wanted to be the love of my life to show me how to love and be loved in return.
That is when Stefan walked into the picture. I saw him at church for the first time, always up front, always loud and crazy and definitely someone I would not be interested in, mainly because he photo-bombed all the photos I took while I was serving in the communications department at church.
In February 2015 our friends connected us over a WhatsApp group where we were all planning to make plans that never came about.
Stefan took my number off the group and started texting me. I didn’t think much of it as he had many friends who were girls and he would often forget to reply to my text messages (meh). It was only at our church’s young adults summer camp where we properly spoke for the first time and things began to change.
My friends and I were sitting on the bleachers watching the soccer when Stefan decided to squeeze in next to me and strike up a conversation. After that conversation I found myself constantly scanning the area to see where he was during the remainder of the camp.
He was the one helping with the food, packing out the chairs and praying for people, it was his servant heart and love for God that drew me to him. After camp he strategically became friends with my friends, organising hangs and even keeping seats so we could all sit together at church.
The day I knew that God sent Stefan to me was on the day of our church’s women’s conference. I was driving to the venue during peak traffic when my car decided to die on me. I pulled over to the side of the road and while I waited I started to panic, as the area I was in wasn’t very safe.
Not even 10 minutes of waiting and a silver polo pulled up on the side of the road next to me, I wasn’t sure whether I should run or be grateful that someone stopped to help. As I approached the car I it was Stefan.
Coincidentally he passed by, noticed my car and stopped when he saw it was me. I honestly couldn’t have been happier and more relieved. I remember God telling me “I’ve sent Stefan to you to keep you safe”, and since that day Stefan has done just that.
Then the big date came, on 25 April 2015 Stefan took me on a date to Maison, a restaurant in Franschhoek, an hour outside of Cape Town. We spent the whole day talking about our family, our friends and our love for Jesus.
At the end of our date he told me he liked me and was going to be intentional about pursuing me. After two months of hanging and getting to know one another better, Stefan asked me to be his girlfriend, all it took was a pack of cards, tickets to the ArtsCape Theatre production of West Side Story and sharing our very first kiss.
How He Asked
After Stefan arrived back from a European holiday with his mom, we planned to go to a Saturday market to spend some quality time with one another. He decided to take the scenic route overlooking our Cape Town beaches.
He suggested we pull over to take a photo as the lighting was awesome (which it was) and seeing as though I just bought film for my Polaroid camera, I jumped at the opportunity. He said he packed in his semi-professional camera.
The camera was already attached to a tripod that he said he bought during his recent travels in Europe (he actually borrowed the tripod from one of his friends). I was quite impressed, because he isn’t into the whole “cute couple photos” thing.
We did a couple of test shots; he ran back and “adjusted the camera settings” ( little did I know he turned it to video mode) he said that he has something in the boot that will make the photo even better. He ran to his car to get the “something”.
I looked out at the ocean, suspecting something was going to happen. I turned around and he came running to me, he handed me a NKJV bible and told me to read a verse he underlined. When I opened the bible, the ring was tied to the bookmark.
The verse read: “And there you shall eat before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice in all to which you have put your hand, you and your households, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.” Deut 12:7 NKJV.
I struggled to read the verse through my tears, he went down on his knee and told me he wants to spend the rest of his life with me, to which my response was a YES! He packed a picnic and suggested that we might pop in at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town, one of my favourite places in the world.
An hour into the picnic some of our closest friends started arriving and joined us for a picnic, not only did he take time to plan our engagement, but an engagement party too. But that is Stefan, always going the extra mile for the people he loves.
Then to add to the day, we had dinner with some of my childhood friends, a party that I happend to organise months in advance. The group of friends is very big and it is very rare that we are all together at the same time.
Unbeknown to me, while I was organising the get together, Stefan messaged one of my friends, informing her about his plans for the day and that it was very important that all the girls are together. In one day I had two engagement parties (one of which I organised without knowing it).
God has truly given me someone who is exceedingly abundantly above all that I could have asked for and I stand in awe of all that He has done for us!
