Stacy and Eugene

How We Met

Eugene and I first met in May of 2015. It was my first weekend off from work in a long time and I was excited to head out for a few drinks with a couple of girlfriends. Little did I know, my best friend Jen had some ideas of her own for that night. Jen had been dating Eugene’s best friend Todd for almost 2 years, and for months leading up to this night she was trying to set me up with one of Todd’s friends she thought I would “love.” I was reluctant. I didn’t like the idea of being set up in case it turned out badly and made things awkward.

However, my “girls night” quickly turned into one of the most memorable nights of my life, as Jen arranged for Eugene to meet us out. I remember catching his eye when he first walked in, thinking to myself how cute I thought he was, only to realize he brought a girl with him. Not knowing any better, I assumed it was his girlfriend! Luckily, it turns out it was his little sister who was home for a few days after college graduation who agreed to come along for moral support. We quickly found ourselves lost in conversation at the crowded bar, and I knew I was hooked. The next day he called to ask me out on our first date, and we’ve been inseparable ever since!

How He Asked

We had been wanting to plan a vacation for some time, so I suggested a trip to Italy. We’ve always talked about going together, seeing as it’s the birthplace of both our ancestors and Gene’s first trip to Europe. I was busy planning fun things for us to do in each city on our tour, but I had no idea he had been doing some planning himself. It was our second day in Venice, one of my most favorite cities in the world. We decided to take a gondola ride around sunset that evening. We’re slowly making our way down the most beautiful, quiet side canal, when Eugene asks for his phone to take a picture. He’s constantly asking me to hold his phone or his keys, so I thought nothing of it. I reach into my purse only to realize I wasn’t carrying his phone, and my heart sank.

I start panicking, thinking to myself that I had left his phone at the restaurant we were at right before our gondola ride, as I had just used it to find a cafe and I didn’t remember giving it back to him. He reaches frantically into his pockets before pulling out the ring box with the biggest smile on his face. I was so shocked that the first words out of my mouth were, “do you have your phone?!” Once the reality of what was happening hit me, the tears started flowing (meanwhile our gondolier is laughing at us)!

He put the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen on my finger, but was so nervous he completely forgot to ask me to marry him. I of course said yes anyways!!!
