Shelby and Michael's Proposal at Capital One Field
How We Met: The summer between my sophomore and junior year of college, I decided to get a job on campus at University of Maryland. Thinking I would never get hired, I applied to Adele’s Restaurant (the only restaurant on campus) for a hostess position. Not only did I get hired, but they decided I would be waitressing (much to my surprise too!). Mike had already been working at Adele’s for a while and worked in the kitchen mainly. We said the occasional hello but weren’t necessarily more than acquaintances. Mike’s best friend, Jon, also worked in the dining room with me and come to find out, we went to rival high schools and knew a lot of the same people. That fall, Adele’s decided to have a formal at a local bar. Being a single girl, I asked my roommate Kaitlyn to be my date. We decided to have people over before the formal and at work a few days before, I extended the invitation to Mike’s friend, Jon. Low and behold, Jon showed up with Michael! (Which many months later he told me he insisted on coming so he could finally talk to me) From that day on we became friends and began talking more regularly. It wasn’t until an unexpected text message on New Years Eve (December 31, 2011) when Michael decided to tell me he loved me from the first time he met me. After what made it seem like the longest winter break apart, we ended up officially dating when we got back to school and we’ve been together ever since.
How He Asked: A few days before the proposal, Mike told me he and I had been invited to a banquet because we had recently donated money to the University of MD Scholarship fund. Although I really (emphasis on really) didn’t want to go, he told me he wanted to spend time with me before I left for Disney World later that week and instead of going out to dinner like we had planned, we should enjoy a night out and attend the banquet. Saturday came and before I knew it we were on our way to UMD for the banquet. As we were walking, Mike told me that the banquet was at the hall next to football stadium and since we had arrived early, we should walk down on the field since we may never get the chance to do so again. After assuring Mike we are bound to get arrested for being on the football field, he insisted we go and ten minutes later we were on the field standing at the 50 yard line. It slowly started to rain and before I could run for cover, I heard the speakers start to play and looked up to see a slide show documenting our relationship thus far on the jumbotron. I was instantly sobbing. As Bruno Mar’s song “I think I wanna marry you” played throughout the stadium for all of University of Maryland to hear, Michael got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. To tell you I remember a word he said when he got down on one knee besides “Will you marry me?”, I would be lying. As all of my dreams came true, I saw both of our families in the stands watching the whole proposal.
After many hugs and congratulations, I found out Mike had planned a private dinner with our closest family and friends at the place where it all started, Adele’s Restaurant.
