Shelby and Micah's Epic Marriage Proposal

Micah and I met in the 7th grade at church, we were awkward friends for about 2 years before we started dating at age 14….

We went to rival high schools, (go Marcus)…

Then finally ended up at A&M together and almost 7 years later, right before I graduated, we got ENGAGED!!

How He Asked: So it was my last week of school, ever, as well as my sorority’s winter formal week. I was the formal chair, so needless to say it was a very stressful week taking test, writing papers, turning in projects, and finalizing all the details to throw a formal for 400+. (including getting my nails done, sneaky one Micah).

A couple of my best friends had come into town, as well as my mother, to “help me decorate and get ready for formal.” So after our sleep over- with my mom and I in my bed, and Kirstin and Brianna in the floor- on Sunday, December 7, 2014, we woke up and all sat on the bed in our pajamas and had ‘girl talk.’ Then we took our time listening to music and getting ready. My mom was so sneaky about all of the details, from picking out my outfit, making sure I wore waterproof mascara, to making me wear boots, so I wouldn’t have to walk through the dirt in heels (notice we all have on boots, that was not an accident…). A few days prior we decided to have a photoshoot out on my land and in old downtown Bryan (that would be the reason that I had on something other than a t-shirt, and what distracted me from this all day mission). We went and took pictures, then went to lunch and came back. I had not really talked to Micah all day- he had sent me a text at one point saying he was studying all day, but I was so preoccupied by my friends.

One of the girls, Brianna, had a panic and said she thought $20 fell out of her boot by the pond at my place, so when we finished taking pictures we headed back to look for it quickly so Kristin could get back to Austin for a “church meeting.” On the way back to my house, I saw Rachel’s car (my mentor, and also photographer), she does tons of family sessions so I assumed she and her husband were shooting out in the pasture; so I called her to tell her I just drove past her, little did I know she was hiding at my house waiting to capture MY moment (she did not answer… haha). Thank goodness I was distracted enough by her daughter hanging out the window to miss Micah’s roommate’s car, as well as my sister-in-law’s. Fast forward to when we get back to my house… there was a note on the door that read:

SNH

“It’s been a long week, I know you’ve worked hard, would you do me a favor and head back to the cattle guard”

I knew the note was from Micah, and the thought crossed my mind that this could be it. But I didn’t want to get my hopes up. I had dreamt of this day for so many years, (because that’s what happens when you find ‘the one’ at age 14) and I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. So we got in the car and drove over the cattle guard and found the next note that said:

SNH

“Now take the dirt road down to the pond, follow the bibles and don’t go beyond.”

As I got out of the car my legs began to shake and my stomach started to turn. I walked towards the first bible laying on the dirt road.

I picked up each one and diligently read the verse highlighted for me. There were 7 bibles total…

After I finished the last one, Micah came around the corner and I could not stop smiling. There was a wooden cross over looking the pond, with a quilt spread out on the grass. On the quilt there was a chest and a basket with the Lord’s Supper in it.

Micah took my hands and asked me how my day was with the girls, struggling to find words- I answered as best I could. He then began to tell me all of the reasons he was in love with me, then proceeded to sit me down on the chest and read powerful Scripture.

We took the Lord’s Supper- as he wanted to reiterate the most important thing in a relationship is Jesus, and keeping our focus centered on Him is the only way our relationship has survived and the only way it will continue. He then stood me up, clasped my hands, and began to pray. Still smiling, I bowed my head and closed my eyes, trying not to anticipate what was coming next.

After he said Amen, Micah looked me in the eyes and reminded me how special our story is, and how he could not wait for me to be his wife – then Micah got down on one knee, used my full name, and asked me to marry him.

I was so overjoyed I could not even take a glance at the ring, all I wanted to do was kiss him. Grinning ear to ear he stood up and wrapped his arms around me, eventually placing the most perfect, stunning ring on my finger. It was more than I could have ever imagined.

Then Rachel came out from behind the trees and took pictures of the two of us glowing with joy.

Micah shortly after loaded me up in his truck, blind folded me, and drove me to our barn. When I turned the corner, there stood about 75 of closest friends and family. I’ve truly never felt so loved in my entire life. By not only my new FIANCÈ, but by all of my friends and family who traveled hours to be there for us in this moment. The support and genuine joy in the barn was more than I could have ever asked for. It reminded me how truly blessed I am to have such incredible friends. I was overwhelmed with hugs and pictures, tears and laughter, but I can honestly say- this was the best day of my life.

Our parents and roommates had thrown the engagement party of the century, with beautiful, sentimental decorations, all with such special detail, not to mention the amazing cake.

Mrs. Blair (Rangerette director) told us one time that Rangerettes was the best thing that would happen to us until we got married and became mothers, and I’m starting to believe she is 100% correct. The way I felt on this day was a feeling and a joy I’ve never felt before, the day was more than perfect. All of the planning, lying, and organizing done between Micah and all my my girlfriends just blows my mind. It was magical, better than my dreams, better than I could have ever imagined. I go through the pictures daily, still in awe. This is a day I will never forget, and one I’ll replay over and over in my head until the day I die. It’s a story I will tell my children, my grandchildren, and all of those in-between. I am so lucky to be marrying my best friend, my high school sweetheart, and my number one fan. So thankful for the Lord and His sweet blessings on our life, and I cannot wait until NOVEMBER 22, 2015 when I officially become a HLADKY!!!!!!
