Shelby and Charles
How We Met
We were both freshmen in college and placed in English 1101 class. I was supposed to have been placed out of that class, so I went to speak to the teacher about it. I then noticed the really cute guy sitting behind me, so I decided to just stick it out for the semester. We got to talking and exchanged numbers (strictly for class purposes, of course).
One day, he mentioned that he had never seen Despicable Me 2 and I told him I had it and invited him over to watch it with me- after which I promptly went to Walmart and actually bought the movie. A few weeks later we went on our first official date out to dinner and then to see Wicked at the Fox Theater. At dinner, he got the kitchen to write “Be My Girlfriend” on the dessert plate and we have been happily dating ever since!
How He Asked
Charles is in the Army and was getting deployed in just two short weeks. I knew that I wanted to get my roommate (and now MOH) Meredith to take some nice pictures of us before he left, but the forecast showed that it was supposed to rain basically every day the week before he left. He had originally had an elaborate picnic date planned where he was going to propose, but with the rain, he decided to switch it up last minute on a Saturday night. He suggested that we go ahead and take some pictures that next morning, since it was supposed to be a pretty day. So, Sunday morning, we got up early, got dressed, and went out to a beautiful hill nearby our house with mountains all behind us. We started taking some pictures when Meredith said that she forgot to change out the memory card on her camera and needed to go switch it out.
While she went back to her backpack, we turned toward the beautiful landscape and started discussing our future. He said that while he was nervous for his upcoming deployment, one thing he knew he didn’t have to worry about was us. He said that he knew that we both knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together, but now he wanted everyone else to know too! He then got down on one knee and asked me the easiest question I’ve ever had to answer.
The whole thing was kismet: we picked the one most beautiful day of the week and the ring fit perfectly (and I never wore rings before so there was no way for him to know my size). On top of everything, we went to tour our favorite venue a few days later (since he wanted to see it before he left) and they only had one day left next fall… and it was the EXACT day we wanted. I couldn’t be more excited to spend the rest of our lives together and I couldn’t imagine a more perfect day.
