Shaylee and Seth
How We Met
Seth and I could be called high school sweethearts in a way. We both met only a couple of weeks before our graduations. I was coming off of a pretty bad breakup when Seth came swooping in. We had met on social media (Yay, Facebook!) through a mutual friend, and he wanted to take me to a bonfire with some of his friends. We both grew up in rural Nebraska, so that was certainly an activity we would enjoy together. Seth was supposed to pick me up at 8 that night, but time ticked by and he wasn’t showing up. 9 PM rolled around, and then 10 PM. All while him promising he was on his way but things kept coming up. I was waiting with my friend and her then-boyfriend because they were going to come along. I was about to tell them to head home, and then I got a phone call that Seth was in my drive way. Not quite. He was actually in the neighbor’s driveway down the road. Soon enough, I saw headlights and I had no idea who I was about to meet. I walked out of the house, friends and my mother in tow, and unknowingly met my future husband.
He shook my mother’s hand, assured her he’d take care of me and that I’d be home before curfew, and I got into his truck. The rest of the night was filled with laughs and learning about each other. By the time I was back home in bed, I knew that something had changed. He had opened the door for me, made sure I was comfortable, offered to get me something to eat and held my hand. Seth was the perfect gentleman, which was such a change for me. I never felt uncomfortable, or like I should have been anywhere else besides sitting right next to him in that old Chevy truck. I was in love by the end of Day 1.
How He asked
Seth is always the first one to tell me that I am beautiful no matter what. Whether I’m wearing manure-covered boots from my riding lesson or the most expensive clothes I own, he looks at me like I’m the only one in the world. The day he proposed was no different. I am passionate about horses, and I had recently becoming very enthusiastic about Hunter Jumper lessons. That day’s lesson had been particularly hard, and I had been beating myself up for it. I drove back to his apartment, sat in my truck for a couple minutes and then walked inside. I opened the apartment door and he was standing right in front of me. He was looking at me strangely, so I just closed the door behind me, thinking that something bad must have happened.
Then he took my hand and got down on one knee. He had joked like this about a million times, and so I laughed, said “oh, stop” and took my hand away. He laughed and took my hand again. He opened up a box of shotgun shells and told me to look inside. At first I saw nothing, then something sparkly caught my eye. I looked at him as he took the ring out, my eyes tearing up. He said, “You know I think you’re the most beautiful girl in the world and you know I love you. Will you marry me?” I just stood there for a second, my mind still couldn’t figure out if he was joking or not. Then, all at once, it hit me and I said yes. He put that (gorgeous) ring on my finger and picked me up in a hug. In that moment, I was the happiest I had ever been. I couldn’t stop laughing, partly from happiness and partly from disbelief that such an amazing man loved me so much that he wanted to marry me.
