Shaye and Cody
How He Asked
The second weekend he came to visit me, Cody and my dad built me an old fashioned wooden plank swing. Me and my parents live on a farm and I had always wanted one. After it was finished, Cody carved our initials in the bottom of it. The swing was built under my favorite tree. Cody came to visit every weekend while stationed in GA, driving over 7 hours. In January 2015, he was relocated and going to being stationed in southern Alberta, Canada. Since the night we met a year earlier, we hadn’t spent more then about a 5-6 days apart. I knew it was going to be difficult seeing each other only when the other one could travel, but it didn’t change anything.
The first weekend, (mid January) he was supposed to start work up there, would be the first weekend we had spent apart in months and I wouldn’t be seeing home again until mid April. My best friend took me out that Friday because she knew how hard of a week it had been after he left. We spent all day shopping and went out to eat and both were supposed to be back at me and my parents house for a family birthday party that night. When we showed up as the sun was going down (45 minutes late), the family was of course out in the yard all bundled up talking and excited to see us. Some of the guys were down at the edge of the field “target practicing” at a huge box. After our hellos my best fiend says “cmon it’s getting dark, lets go swing for a few minutes.”
We walk down to the swing and as I turn the corner of the tree, Cody is standing there beside the swing with a tiny box in his hand. A photographer steps out from behind the huge “target” box in the field.
He gets on one knee and my whole family, who is surrounding the tree at that point, starts applauding and crying. Of course I’m crying happy tears and in complete disbelief.
I couldn’t believe he was here, and I most certainly couldn’t believe he was proposing.
Him and my dad had gone and picked the ring out together weeks before he left.
It was one of the best nights of my life. We got married last October, and are now stationed back here near my hometown.
