Shane Co. Couple: Ryan and Hollie’s Golden Gate Bridge Proposal
How We Met
In 2012, Hollie and I met on a weekend cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. Both of us were on the ship with a big group of friends celebrating birthdays. On the second night of the cruise we crossed paths on the dance floor, and the rest is history! We discovered that we lived in different parts of California. I lived in the northern part of the state and Hollie was in the southern region. A big milestone for us was when I accepted a job in southern California, allowing us to live closer together after two years of long-distance dating.
How He Asked
I wanted the proposal to be a complete surprise, but on the morning I planned to get down on one knee, Hollie became a little suspicious. We were in northern California for my birthday and had plans to go to brunch in Berkeley with some of our friends. Hollie, a very mindful and careful observer, noticed we were not on the way to Berkeley and she asked, “Is this the Golden Gate Bridge? Why are we here?”
Indeed, we were at Fort Point Historic Site at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Beforehand, I had asked a couple of my friends to hide there and take pictures of the proposal. We had extremely lucky timing, as there were no other visitors at the site. Once we got out of the car and walked over to the bridge, I got down on one knee and asked the big question. Hollie, of course, said “yes” and our friends came out of their hiding spots to celebrate the special moment! All of us then went to our planned brunch in Berkeley at the marina.
How He Found the Ring
Early on in the relationship, Hollie jokingly dropped hints about the kind of ring she would be interested in if we made it that far down the road: a cushion cut diamond in a halo setting. Fast forward to 2015, when after confirming with some of her close friends that Hollie’s taste was in line with what she shared a few years back, I was able to find almost exactly what Hollie wanted at Shane Co.
