Erica and Joe's Sears Tower Proposal
How He Asked: I purchased tickets to my favorite band and assumed I would be taking a friend since my boyfriend and I do not exactly have the same taste in music. I was a little surprised when he wanted to come with me instead. Since we were going to be driving a few hours we decided to make a weekend of it. We got to Chicago early to do a little sight-seeing. We weren’t too sure if we were going to the aquarium or to the Willis (Sears) Tower. The wait for the Willis Tower was an hour and a half. Needless to say, we almost bailed! I’m glad we didn’t.
On the way to the top we had to wait in this long line to go through the security where you had to empty your pockets and go through a scanner. Joe had gone to the bathroom several times while waiting in this line. It did not throw up any red flags for me though because he has a bladder the size of a pea.
We finally reached the 103rd floor. It was a very nice day so not only did we have to contend with the greyhound bus full of sorority girls but also all the other people who had our same idea. There are these “sky decks” made of glass that you can walk out on to get a full 360 degree bird’s-eye view of the city. Of course I wanted to go out on one! The shortest line for one happened to be the one where the camera guy was set up taking pictures so that you could purchase them in the gift shop as you left. I didn’t really care about the picture but just wanted to go out there. In the first picture we were just standing next to each other smiling. For the next one, I was going to do a funny pose but before I knew it the camera guy was ready to take the picture. I was going to face the camera when I felt Joe yanking on my hand. I looked over, realized he was on his knee and then he very nervously said “Will you marry me?” The camera man knew exactly when to click that button because as you can see Joe is looking at me smiling and I’m in complete shock!
Joe isn’t one to be in front of a crowd so he rushed me off the sky deck and we had an amazing, intimate moment together by the window looking out over the city of Chicago. Moments after he proposed the greyhound bus full of sorority girls were snapping and clapping. Everyone was coming up to us congratulating us. It was the most incredible surprise of my life!
Later he told me that had we ditched the Willis Tower, he had a backup plan for the aquarium! Also, the reason for the multiple bathroom trips was to get rid of the bulky box my ring had come in because he knew I would notice that being put in the basket before going through security! He wasn’t able to get the box back but I told him I didn’t mind because since I was never taking my ring off, there would be no use for it anyway!
