Sayde and Matt

How We Met

We met in the beginning when Matt invited me to help him photograph a wedding. I was doing landscape photography as a hobby, and was curious about wedding photography, so I jumped at the opportunity.  It was a lot of fun, but being shy, I was a bit nervous; especially after I clumsily lost a piece of Matt’s photo equipment on the beach. Good first impression, I know. Luckily I found it again, and he was cool about it.  After that wedding quickly became friends, and began to realize that we had a lot more in common than just a love for photography, and a relationship developed.  Apparently he was pretty impressed despite my flub, because we’ve been shooting weddings together as a team ever since!

How He Asked

Matt took me on a little weekend road trip down from Vancouver BC to Portland OR to see one of my favourite musicians.  We spent some time exploring in the city, and then headed to the coast the next day.  When we first started dating, we talked a lot about places we’d love to go and photograph, and Cannon Beach as one of them!  It was really warm that day, for a February, and it was great to feel the sun! We walked along the beach for a while, stopping every once in a while to take photos.  At one spot, Matt suggested that we set the tripod up to take some photos of both of us with the scenery in the background, which is something we do when we travel.

The tripod was set, the timer was ready, and we were finally going to have a shot of us at Cannon Beach.  Matt ran into the photo with me and we smiled for the camera as it clicked a few times.  Matt grabbed me by the waist, kissed me, and said I love you.  It was at that moment I realized the camera hadn’t stopped clicking, it just kept clicking and clicking and clicking. And then one of Matt’s hands started to shake, and his other hand reached behind his back.

Next thing I knew he was down on one knee, and instead of looking up into Matt’s light blue eyes, I was staring down into the deep blue gem in a wooden box he had just opened.

I became very aware of how I was aware of nothing else.  I know Matt was speaking, but I remember little of it.  I no longer heard the sound of the camera shutter clicking, or the waves crashing. I couldn’t feel the wind on my skin, or the goosebumps that rippled across me.  The people on the beach, and the seagulls in the sky ceased to exist.  All I could see was Matt, and all I could hear was the voice in my head shouting, “Holy crap, oh my god, is this real? Is this real, oh my god, holy crap!”  I just stood there staring and trying not to cry. It must have been a while, cause Matt had to say, “Are you saying yes to me?”, to snap me back to reality. Of course I was saying yes!

The awesome part of having the whole thing on the tripod, was that Matt photographed the entire thing,a nd was even able to make a silly little GIF out of all the photos.
