Savannah and Zane
How We Met
Zane and I met through his grandma who had been my piano teacher since I was about 10 years old. Over the years she would tell me about all of her grandchildren but particularly Zane and how handsome he is. I had never really thought much of it until the summer after we both graduated high school when I got a call from Zane’s grandma. She asked if she could give Zane my phone number and told me that Zane and I “should meet at her house and go catch a show or something.” I told her she could but never heard from Zane.
A few months went by and I started college. On one of my visits back home, I decided to go visit Zane’s grandma. Of course she jumped on the opportunity to see if Zane could come over and meet me. She tried calling him but he was out of town for his sister’s volleyball tournament yet that didn’t stop her!
A couple months later, I was home from Christmas break when I got a call from Bonnie again. She had called to tell me that Zane had gotten back together with his ex-girlfriend and she wasn’t very happy about it. She said that she was going to see what she could do about it. Needless to say, something she did must have worked! The next month Zane contacted me saying he was coming down to visit his friend who went to the same college and asked me out on a double date. As you can see, it took us a while but Zane’s grandma finally got her wish!
How He Asked
Zane proposed to me on December 12, 2015 in Maui, Hawaii. We had just gotten to Hawaii the day before and I noticed that while traveling, he seemed more anxious that he normally is. I was just thinking I hadn’t flown with him before and this must be how he is when he flies. Little did I know he was actually traveling with the ring in his carry on and he was planning on proposing the next day (I probably would have been a little anxious too)!
When we got to Hawaii, his parents picked us up. While on the way to the hotel, Zane’s mom told him all the boys had to get up early in the morning to go help their friend gather wood who is a local tiki carver. She then said the girls would meet up with them for breakfast at a restaurant on the beach at 7:00 am. I didn’t think anything of it, sounded completely normal to me!
The next morning we were a little bit late getting out the door. We left about the time we were supposed to meet them at the “restaurant”. Zane’s mom began to get nervous saying she hoped we wouldn’t be late because Zane wanted to be there for the sunrise. I still didn’t think much of it because that is something he would’ve said. A few minutes later we got to the parking lot of what I thought was the restaurant. We began walking down a huge flight of stairs that lead to a beach. When we reached the bottom of the stairs, I looked up and saw Zane. His mom and sister stood back and I got the impression that I should probably keep walking forward. At this point I was still looking for a restaurant but as Zane walked up to me I noticed that his right pocket seemed a little bit bigger than normal which is when I finally caught on to what was about to happen. He took me by the hand and then walked me over to a spot in the sand and then got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him. Of course I said, “yes!” Then he picked me up and twirled me around then he put me down and said he had one more surprise for me. He pointed toward a big boulder and out from behind it came my mom and stepdad. I was in shock and couldn’t keep myself from crying. Then we all actually went to the restaurant they had been telling me about but on a completely different beach. But needless to say, we couldn’t be more excited and can’t wait to start our life together!
