How We Met

Johnny and I met when I was 17 years old and he was 18. He was the “good boy” in high school and I guess you could say I was the “wild girl.” The first time we met was at a friend of ours 18th birthday house party. I was dancing on a table with 3 of my best friends when the table tipped and Johnny just so happened to walk by and literally sweep me off my feet. We could not have been more wrong for one another but that was on March 18, 2011 and we’ve been together ever since.

How He Asked

I graduated from nursing school on December 17th this year so Jonny decided to take me to New York City to celebrate that and as an early Christmas present. We stayed in the most perfect little hotel right in between Times Square and Central Park. On day one and two we did so much walking and sight seeing but still had a full day planned for day 3. We headed to breakfast at The Chelsea Market where I had gluten free chicken and waffles. I have celiac disease so this was a HUGE deal for me. The funny thing is, that morning I instagrammed a pic of my breakfast and captioned it “If I’ve ever said ‘this is the best day of my life’ before, I lied. This is it.” Little did I know….. After breakfast we headed to do some shopping and exploring in the SoHo area. Our plan was to end the day walking across The Brooklyn Bridge. I had seen a picture of my friends there the week before and hadn’t stopped talking about it so of course Jonny said we would go.

He told me we should try to time it out right so we would be there at sunset since it would be across the water and the city skyline would be in the background. If you know me, you know I absolutely live for a good sunset. So, we headed for the bridge at the perfect time. It was SO packed. Who knew so many people wanted to see this beautiful bridge at sunset I thought it was just me right? We stopped along the way and had a sweet couple take our picture together which I was super pleased with- doesn’t happen very often on the first try!

Jonny then told me he had seen some people down by the water and that we should try to get down there to finish off golden hour. Of course I was down! We headed off the bridge to the other side into a tunnel that put us out in Brooklyn. Jonny is a walking GPS might I add so I immediately challenged him and teased him saying there was no way he would get us down to the water in time and he wouldn’t be able to find it. He did. We headed into the Brooklyn Bridge Park and began walking down a pathway. He said on the way down “Savannah, you know you are my baby right?” “Yes, Jonathan I know” (rolls eyes). “Savannah, I love you so much” (kisses my hand).

This wasn’t unusual at all he says these things quite regularly. Hints the eye rolling. As we finally started walking down to the water gold glittery letters caught my eye and it took me a minute to realize that they said “Marry Me.”

My response was “IS THIS FOR ME?!?!”

He got down on one knee and told me he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and asked if I would be his wife.

At first I kept saying “I can’t, I can’t” “I hate you, Jonathan I hate you.” Eventually I said “YES!” I could not stop crying after he pulled out the ring.

My breath was taken away because the ring was everything I had ever dreamed of.

I cried some more and some more and he then told me “I’ve been waiting to get this knee dirty.” It was after that when I realized three of our friends were there and one of them being a professional photographer.

Jonny had paid to have them flown to NYC that morning so they could be there and help capture the moment. I then cried more and told them I hated them too.

The proposal was everything I could have ever dreamed of and absolutely perfect. The time and thought Jonny put into it was so evident and my heart still wants to burst when I think about it.
