Savanna and Kaleb
How We Met
Kaleb and I met back in high school. I was in my sophomore year and he was a junior. My family had just moved so I was new and didn’t know many people. Kaleb had a class with my friend Courtney and while I was waiting on her after class I met him for the first time. Over the next few months, we got to know each other more and I remember always thinking how sweet, funny, and handsome Kaleb was.
Summer came and we didn’t see each other or talk much, but he made such a lasting impression on me that made him very hard to forget. When school started back in the fall, it was funny how our paths seemed to cross constantly.
One day I was coming around the corner when I saw him. We made eye contact and he waved then proceeded to wink at me, so I decided that I was going to reach out to him. Later that same day I happened to be on Instagram and Kaleb’s post came up on my news feed, so I commented on it anticipating that eventually, we were going to talk. After that, Kaleb asked me for my number and from that day on I have talked to him every day since! Oct 2, 2012.
How He Asked
For Christmas, one of my gifts from Kaleb’s family was a two-day trip to Disney World. From there, we were going to spend the weekend at his family’s condo in Florida. I didn’t think much about it since his family has annual passes to Disney World and we all usually go to the condo during Christmas. Prior to going down to the Florida, Kaleb’s oldest sister, Kady, and her husband, Drew (who are amazingly talented photographers), told Brittany (Kaleb’s youngest sister) and me that she wanted to take some pictures of us for her website page.
She told us to bring cute outfits that would fit the beach-themed look she was going for. Friday rolled around and up to that point nothing seemed out of the ordinary to me. Later, Kady said the three of us girls were going to head down to the beach and get some pictures while the boys got ready to come down later to meet us.Once Brittany and I finished getting ready we headed down to the golf course and beach spot where Kady said she wanted to get some “really cool” shots (all of this was to trick me) for her website page.
Meanwhile, the whole time I am just posing and taking pictures like it is my modeling debut. When we got to the edge of the golf course we stood looking towards the beach and I saw Kaleb standing there too overdressed for beach pictures. He took my hand and guided me towards a path aligned with flowers and candles.
We continued to a quilt, which had a chair, a table with a picture of us, a bible with my future new name on it, and music playing in the background. As he was walking me down I was trying to wrap my head around what was happening. This was a day I had dreamed of and prayed for and it was actually happening! When we got to the quilt Kaleb prayed over us for our relationship and marriage that God would continue to lead us and be at the center of our lives. He told me that he wanted to wash my feet because that was something I always talked about doing one day when we got married.
As he was doing this he explained that Jesus did this with His disciples to symbolize serving one another. Kaleb went on to say that he wanted to serve me the way that Jesus did then and still does now. While he washed my feet he handed me a journal to read a letter he had written inside. Once I finished reading the letter and Kaleb was done with the foot washing he stood me up and grabbed a ring box from behind the picture frame on the table (at this point I was just beside myself). He got down on one knee and said “Savanna Rae will you marry me?” (Staring in amazement of the ring) I said, “YES, YES, YES!!”
Little did I know he had one more surprise up his sleeve. After he asked me, we hugged and he told me to call my parents, so I did and they were over the moon, excited about it. As happy as I was, I was thinking that it would be nice if my parents could be there and right about that time I see them as well as Kaleb’s parents walking towards us. My eyes filled with tears of joy when I saw my sweet parents. I was so overwhelmed with all the love that enveloped around Kaleb and I. I knew that God had orchestrated that special day for such a time as this and it could not have been more perfect.
I am so blessed and thankful for Kaleb. He made our proposal so thoughtful and special to me. To top it all off, Kady got some incredible pictures of Kaleb and me together along with our families, which will be something I will look back on to cherish that day forever. We are both so excited to start this next chapter in our lives and to see what God has in store for us!
