Sarah's Proposal in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

How We Met

We met in a little bar in my hometown of Burlington, Iowa, in October of 2013. He had just moved to town for work, and the second I locked eyes with him, I knew something was different about him. He wore a baseball hat low over his eyes that he would wink at me from underneath, playfully, as time would go on. He had a way of even just taking a sip out of his beer that made it hard for me to look away, and his smile lit up the whole room. There was just something about him that made me wonder how I could possibly get to know him better, it was honestly the first time in my life I’d ever felt like there was an invisible electrical current running between myself and someone. Lucky for me, it didn’t take long to realize the feeling was mutual. The first snow of the season came sooner than usual that year, and I broke away from our mutual friends to go outside by myself to look up to the night sky and soak up the quiet of the night (and enormous snowflakes) for just a moment. I wasn’t outside more than ten seconds before I heard the door close behind me, and there he was, standing there smiling. I didn’t have a jacket on, and he did, so I moved closer and unzipped his jacket a bit, telling him I just wanted to put my arms in to warm them up a bit. He kissed me, and I can remember nothing on me felt cold, anymore. I felt like my soul was on fire! That was the beginning of us, and since then we’ve been inseparable.

We had talked about marriage quite a bit throughout our 3+ years of dating, and I knew it was sometime in our near future, but I had no idea leading up to his proposal that it was going to happen right then! We had enjoyed traveling many places together, from deep-sea fishing in Alaska, to the beaches of Cabo, to Disney World, to about 20 different states. So, naturally, nothing set off any red flags when he mentioned we should go on an all-inclusive, adults-only vacation in Jamaica. When it comes to fun, new places, you don’t ever have to ask me twice!

How He Asked

We arrived in Jamaica on November 30th, 2017. We were so excited to get to the resort, order a fun beach drink, and just start relaxing on the beach! We spent an incredible afternoon on the beach, and it wasn’t long before it was time to head back up to our room to freshen up for dinner. I jumped in the shower to start getting ready. As soon as I got out, with my hair up in a towel, and another giant towel around me, Mike said “Sarah, you’ve got to get out here right away, you REALLY don’t want to miss this!” So I walked out to the balcony where Mike was standing (with the MOST amazing view of the sun going down), to which he replied “No, that won’t work”, (referring to me in a towel, haha) so I ran back inside and threw open my suitcase, digging around for something to throw on before I missed the last few minutes of sunset. I ran back out onto the balcony with only a few minutes to spare before it was completely dark out. I commented to him how lucky we were to experience such a great place and have such an incredible view.

He said “will you marry me, someday?” to which I responded “well, DUH, babe”, and didn’t even look over at him. (Backstory: he asked me this all the time, to which I would always respond “you just have to ask!”) It was then that I saw him move down to the ground, from the corner of my eye. I looked over, and saw him videoing me with our Go-Pro. I can’t even tell you, for sure, what followed in those next few minutes (without the help of the Go-Pro) because I was so shocked that IT WAS HAPPENING! After he got done with his sweet words, he reminded me that I hadn’t actually responded yet (I was just staring, then crying, and finally nodding) to which I finally said the easiest “yes!” of my life! We went out for a late dinner, and then called all our friends and family to tell them the wonderful news.

***Mike, unbeknownst to me, had already asked my dad for my hand in marriage just a few weeks prior, when we were home for Thanksgiving.***
