Sarah and Jordan
How We Met
With the encouragement of a few persistent friends, Jordan and I met for lunch for our first date at a local pizza parlor called Homeslice. On the day of our first date I just happened to get out of work early, so I asked if we could grab lunch instead of the original dinner plans we had made. As I showed up from work in my nursing scrubs, my hair in a mess, and had changed the original plans from dinner to lunch, Jordan immediately thought he was being “friend zoned”. Unaware of how long it had been, three hours passed as we sat, ate, and enjoyed each other’s company. It didn’t take long though for both of us to realize that there was something about the way we hit it off and that neither of us were being “friend zoned”. Shortly into our meal I knew Jordan was someone special and I left that date in shock of how well the casual pizza lunch date had gone. I was so excited to go on another date with him! Deep down I think I knew that this was the start of something amazing, something indescribable, and something that would eventually make the fairytales jealous.
How He Asked
Jordan’s proposal was perfect. It was inspired by the first trip we had ever taken together and revolved around his motto of wanting “to start our biggest adventure in the same location we had our first”. The first trip we took together was a small day trip to Saugatuck, Michigan, where Jordan got to see the Dunes for the first time. We had a blast hiking, exploring the small town, and jamming out to the radio on the 2.5 hour drive from Chicago.
Fast forward a year and a half and we were back in the car on that same familiar route blasting the music while singing obnoxiously. We were on our way to what I thought was his company party, but Jordan had other things on his agenda. Being the clever man that he is, Jordan had his boss send me fake email invites to a cocktail party on October 16th, 2016, honoring a new branch of their company opening in Saugatuck, Michigan. Little did I know that the opening of this ‘Saugatuck branch’ was only a ploy to get me back to the location of where we took our first adventure.
In accordance with his secret plan, we arrived to our destination early, so Jordan suggested we revisit the same trails we had hiked on our first trip to the quaint town of Saugatuck. Of course I agreed, and twenty minutes into the hike we reached a clearing that overlooked the same Dunes we had been at a year and a half ago. As we hiked across the familiar trails we began to reminisce on our first trip when suddenly Jordan’s whole demeanor changed. With tears in his eyes and the biggest smile spread across his face, he got down on one knee. As my own eyes began to well up, my best friend asked me to join him for our craziest adventure yet and for me to spend the rest of my life with him. Somewhere between utter shock and screams of pure excitement it slowly started to sink in, that starting today, I was going to be able to spend every day with the love of my life and the man of my dreams! WE WERE ENGAGED!! What an amazing feeling.
Hands shaking with excitement and eyes still filled with tears of joy, we walked back down the trail where to my surprise, I saw my dad peaking from behind a tree. That was it. The real water works came as my dad started walking towards us, my mom popped out with a camera from behind a tree, my brothers came out from their hiding places, and even my dad’s best friend who is like a second father to me flew in from Atlanta to celebrate this amazing day! As I ran into everyone’s arms my smile was a million miles long. I truly could not believe how lucky I was. After a few hours of celebrating and taking pictures we ventured back to my family’s home where we spent the rest of the evening sharing our great news with other family and friends! Saugatuck, Michigan, will forever be the location that we not only took our first trip, but also began our most exciting journey.
Every little girl dreams of the day that she will be proposed too, but in addition to answering the easiest and most exciting question of my life, I also got to take a trip of a lifetime with my “forever adventure partner” just two days after the proposal. Jordan and I both believe that life is meant to be explored, that you should live every day to the fullest, and never let even one day go wasted. Together, we have been fortunate enough to travel all over the country. Keeping with that theme, exactly two days after Jordan proposed, we took our first international trip together to visit Ireland, a country that holds much significance to Jordan and his family and holds a special place in both our hearts. Being able to experience that trip together, as a newly engaged couple, is irreplaceable and something we will both remember forever. Jordan, wanting to continue the engagement celebrations, decided to surprise me by arranging for a photographer to take our engagement photos at Ashford Castle! I swear, this man never ceases to amaze me!
Jordan and I are blessed with amazing family and friends who have all helped to make our engagement better than we could have ever imagined! Thank you to everyone who has made this milestone so remarkable.
Most importantly, thank you Jordan for your unconditional love. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us. I am the luckiest women in the world because I have you.
