Sarah and Drew

How We Met

Drew and I have gone to school together since 6th grade. I had the biggest crush on him, but he had no idea who I was so I just crushed on him from afar. Flash forward to our junior year of high school. Every year, students from my high school are in charge of the services at my church for a weekend and I was pretty involved in the planning. After the Saturday night service, a bunch of us went to Chipotle to hang out. Drew and his best friend came because their friend was there that also happened to be a friend of mine too, and I was so nervous because my “biggest crush” was hanging out with us. We had a very short conversation that night about how we are both afraid of snakes and I was excited but thought we would never talk again.

My best friend Alyssa and Drew’s best friend Bryce had been texting on and off for a few weeks, so I used this as a way to get to talk to Drew more. I went out on a limb and asked a mutual friend for Drew’s number so that I could invite him and Bryce to a BBQ I was having at my house. He couldn’t come (I was so sad), but we actually kept texting for a while after that.

A few days later, Drew and Bryce asked Alyssa and I to go get ice cream (our first date!). Alyssa and I were so nervous that we practiced conversations before they came to pick us up (typical high schoolers). The date was so fun and Drew and I got along really well, but I was still in denial that my biggest crush could possibly like me back. After that night, Drew and I texted every day and the four of us hung out every weekend. We started to really get to know each other and I realized how amazing of a guy he was. I was at the gym with my sister when Drew told me that he “liked me” for the first time, my knees went weak and I was so excited that I almost fell off the treadmill haha.

He asked me to our junior prom and we had our first kiss in my driveway that same week. The night before prom, Drew and I was in Newport Beach for a date night. It was such a beautiful day so we walked down to the end of the pier, and Drew asked me to officially be his girlfriend! And the rest is history! We went to the same college in San Diego and it was such a blessing to go through high school, college, and grad school together.

How He Asked

Drew was graduating from his Master’s program and I finished my teaching credential program on the same weekend, so both of our parents were in town. We had a nice dinner planned with them in Coronado (which I thought was to celebrate graduation). I finished my last day of student teaching and Drew came over to my apartment with flowers to congratulate me. We had a while until dinner, so he asked if I wanted to head to Coronado early to a beach spot that overlooks the city to walk around and take pictures. We have been to this beach spot many times before, so I didn’t think anything of it. We got dressed up and headed over and looking back, I am so impressed with how calm and normal he was acting!

We took some pictures, but it was stormy and windy so I was getting cold. Drew pulled out his tripod and said that we should just take one picture of us before we leave. I thought it was a little weird that he had his tripod, but we take self-timer pictures all the time so again, I didn’t really think much of it. He told me go stand out on the beach so that he could get it set up and I joked that he was going to have to run fast to pose before the camera went off. As he walked towards me, he reached into his pocket and my heart immediately stopped and I started to cry. We had talked about marriage and getting engaged soon, but I had NO clue it was going to happen then. I didn’t even have my nails done because I was not expecting it at all! He pulled out a ring box, got down on one knee, and started to tell me how much he loved me. I was so shocked and kept asking him, “Is this real? Are you serious? This is really happening?” He asked me to spend the rest of our lives together and pulled out the most beautiful ring I have ever seen, and I, of course, said yes! It was the most beautiful setting to get engaged to the man of my dreams.

I had to call my sister first because she is my best friend. She lives in North Carolina so as excited as I was, I was sad that she was not there and that I wouldn’t see her for a few weeks. All of a sudden, my dad answers my sister’s phone and I found out that Drew flew my sister out to San Diego to be there for our engagement. I was completely shocked and overwhelmed with joy. In order to keep this a complete surprise for me, Drew didn’t even tell our friends so I got to call all of my best friends and surprise them too!

We met up with our parents and my sister at the restaurant that overlooks the city and celebrated. He told me all about how hard it was to keep this a secret, and he completely pulled it off! It was the most incredible, romantic weekend and I am so thankful I get to spend forever with my best friend and middle school crush!
