Sara and Vince

Sara and Vince's Engagement in Wormsloe Plantation, Savannah, Georgia

How We Met

As a junior at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA preparing to move to New York City for my final year of school, I had no intentions of “settling down” or finding THE ONE. Miss independent (aka me) claimed she did not need a man and vowed to make the most of her time left in PA living it up with her girlfriends and teammates before her big year in the city. Riding that independence, and dressed for a country-themed night (yes, so college), I had no intentions of meeting the love of my life. Enter Vince Lombardi, the kindest college senior a girl could find. We danced and talked the night away, hitting it off and exchanging numbers at the end but leaving things very casual – miss independent was NOT going to get tied down to one guy!

Vince, however, had a different plan. After that night, he pursued me with everything he had (and every romantic bone in his Italian body). Wine and handwritten notes left on my doorstep, chocolates when I was feeling down, rides to 8am class in snowstorms, dinners out “just because” – he had found something worth pursuing and was not going to let it go. He pursued me for four months (FOUR MONTHS!) and slowly broke down my cold independent exterior and taught me what it meant to be taken care of and cherished. On January 9th, 2014 (over sushi and before a Sabers game, because Vince does nothing half-way) I agreed to be his girlfriend. Fast-forward through college graduations, separate cities, different states, new jobs and Vince entering the United States Navy – we have weathered the trials of long-distance and flourished as a couple. My heart has found its best friend.

How He Asked

Vince is stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. Before I moved down south to join him last February, we saw each other every few months when time allowed – taking small weekend trips and cherishing the time we had together (and the stateside station). One of our favorite weekend trips was Savannah, Georgia.

Wanting to share our love of Savannah with my little sister, Olivia, I planned a trip for us the weekend of November 4th, 2017. I picked the destination, bought her plane ticket, picked the restaurants, and even helped select the airbnb. Little did I know, Olivia and Vince had a surprise up their sleeve and I was planning my OWN engagement weekend! The weekend arrived (along with a surprise addition of my best friend Amanda, yes, I cried at the airport) and I thought a fun weekend with my girls (and Vince) was about to happen, nothing more. That Saturday we decided to play tourists and get some good pictures (Amanda had a new professional-grade camera to break in). We got dressed up and headed to Wormsloe Plantation. The sun was shining and it was picture-perfect, I was so happy just to share this favorite spot with my sister and friend. We walked the long tree-lined road, I got some pictures with my love and took in the beauty around us. I was ready to leave when Olivia and Amanda said Vince and I needed one more picture, since no cars were in the road. Reluctantly, I posed for one more picture and followed their directions to walk forward and pose in front of Vince. When I turned around, he was on one knee with the most genuine smile on his face and a (gorgeous) ring in his hand.

Amanda captured all of it and we had a heck of a celebration in Savannah afterwards. I will forever cherish that moment and the look on his face. Savannah will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
