Sara and Jon

How We Met

Jon and I did not meet in a usual way; our relationship actually began online through Facebook Messenger. It was January 2014 and I had just moved back to Tucson after living in Orlando, FL for the past eight months. Jon had added me as a friend on Facebook, and one night he sent me a message asking me all about my Disney College Program. I was more than happy to answer his questions and tell him all about it, and that is how our first conversation started. As the conversation grew, we started talking about our time at the University of Arizona, what our hobbies were, all of the video games we liked to play, and almost everything in between. Jon and I had a lot in common, so it was very easy and comfortable for us to talk to one another. After about a week or so of talking every day, Jon asked me to meet him for coffee at a Starbucks near campus after work. All I really remember is being very nervous and hesitant before leaving my house that night to meet him. I had left about 15 minutes too early out of anticipation, and as I was driving to Starbucks I was thinking of all of the excuses I could make to turn around and go back home.

The butterflies in my stomach were going wild and I almost texted him to call the whole thing off. As I was sitting at a stoplight near campus though, I decided to just face my nerves and drive to Starbucks, and I am so glad I did! Because I had left so early, I ended up getting to Starbucks about 10 minutes before Jon showed up. I was still so anxious and felt so awkward as I sat there and waited for him to show up. When I saw him walk up to where I was sitting, though, all of my nerves disappeared and I couldn’t help myself from smiling. We went inside and ordered our coffee, sat down at a table, and fell right into conversation. We talked about everything and anything; I told him stories from my Disney College Program, he told me all about his work and his volleyball team, and I just remember thinking to myself how easy it was to talk to him and what an amazing person he was. After that night, Jon and I found any excuse we could to hang out with each other. On February 7th, 2014, Jon bought tickets to go to a Suns game up and Phoenix and asked me to go with him as his girlfriend. I immediately said yes and ever since that day Jon and I haven’t really spent more than a day away from each other.

How He Asked

Disney had always played a very important role in my life, so for a long time Jon knew he wanted to ask me to marry him at my favorite place in the whole world: Disneyland! Jon and I try to go to Disneyland every year to celebrate my birthday, but unfortunately he had to miss our annual trip in 2016 to start a new job. When he mentioned the idea of making a trip out there the following March instead, I didn’t ask any questions! Coincidently, my best friend from my Disney College Program, Morgan, had also just moved out to California so we came up with the idea to plan a trip for all three of us to go together. On March 23rd, Jon and I packed up our suitcases and drove out to San Diego to pick up Morgan and then the three of us headed to Anaheim to start our vacation. Once we got there we spent the evening in Downtown Disney. We got dinner, visited all of the shops, and then went to see Beauty and the Beast at the theater. The next morning the three of us headed to Disneyland and spent the whole day running around like little kids having the best day ever!

The next morning, Morgan and I decided to Disney Bound in the parks as our two favorite characters, Anna and Elsa, so we woke up early to get ready and dress up for the day. Morgan told me that she wanted to recreate some of the photos we had taken during our Disney College Program and wanted to stop by Disneyland first before heading over to California Adventure. I thought that sounded like a really fun idea, so I didn’t object, and Jon agreed it sounded like fun. When we got to the parks, she led me over to Sleeping Beauty Castle and I thought I was dragging Jon along with us (little did I know why we were really there). We stood in line for the photo pass cast member who was directly in front of the castle and Morgan distracted me with small talk while Jon, unbeknownst to me, was pulling the ring box out of his backpack. When it was our turn to go up and take photos, Morgan and I went up first to take our pictures, and then she walked away and Jon came up next to me to take a few more pictures. We did our usual poses and then as I was getting ready to walk away and go and grab our stuff, the photo pass cast member asked Jon if there were any more poses we would want to do. After that, everything gets kind of fuzzy. I remember Jon turning to look at me and then I remember him getting down on one knee.

Marriage Proposal Ideas in Disneyland

Once I realized what was happening, the butterflies in my stomach started fluttering and my knees got really weak. Sadly, I don’t remember much of what Jon said, but I do remember him saying that he loved me so much and that he wanted to marry me. Through my happy tears I immediately said yes! After that, Jon slid the ring onto my finger and everyone around us stopped, cheered, and congratulated us. All the while the photo pass cast member was taking photos for us and Morgan was able to record and capture the entire proposal for us. It was honestly the most perfect moment of my life! After that, we got churros to celebrate the moment and then spent the remainder of our trip celebrating our engagement in the happiest place on earth!
