Samantha and Oliver
How We Met
Ollie and I met at work. We were both mechanical maintenance apprentices at the company we work for. He was 16 I was 18 when we first met. He barely even spoke to me. I remember asking him how his holiday to Portugal with his family was, he just turned around and walked away from me. I couldn’t believe it, I thought “this guy seriously doesn’t even want to know.”
After that we got chatting about work and what we like to do outside of work. I found out I had a lot in common with him. We both love Batman and all things DC. He’s also really into cars, so I used that to my advantage and got him to teach me a thing or two.
After two years of being friends, he asked me to the cinema (our first date). Our second date, he took me to Windsor for dinner in his convertible. I’ll always remember it because it was a beautiful evening and there was lots of tourists taking photos of us in the car. He asked me to be his girlfriend. It was a beautiful start to a beautiful relationship.
How He Asked
Ollie and I decided we’d like to go on holiday this year. I mentioned my friends who I knew from their time living in the UK and going to school with me. My best friend Elisha wanted to come a long too. So we booked and flew out on the 10th June 2016. The whole holiday I kept saying things like “Disneyland would be a magical place to get engaged” or “when Alex and Vicky come to visit the UK next, maybe we’ll be engaged and then we could go dress shopping.” Eventually Ollie got so tired of me saying this he said “I’m not proposing out here. You’ve always said you want to go tell your family straight away.” I so stayed quiet for the rest of the trip.
On the last few days before we flew home we went to stay in our friends cabin up in Lake Tahoe. It was beautiful. I was awestruck by the whole place.
It was getting late and Elisha and Alex said they’d start making dinner. Vicky said “oh man we should have brought some garlic bread and ice cream, Sammy do you want to come to the shop and get some?” I said yeah of course. Ollie came along too so he could get some nice shots of the area. I thought it was weird how they both put jackets on. It wasn’t cold, but I didn’t think anything of it. On our way back from the shop Vicky said “lets go down to the lake and take a look around” so we did. We walked out onto the little pier and Vicky was taking loads of photos. She said they would be for us to remember the place and she is a great photographer so I didn’t even think twice. Anyway there was a guy sat on the end of the pier drinking and so we went down onto the beach. I was confused coz I thought, surely the ice cream is melting. It’s like 25 degrees Celsius. That’s when Ollie took both of my hands and said “Samantha Alice McRae, we’ve been together 2 years 11 months and 19 days, I love you with all I have and I want to spend the rest of my life with you” by this point I was in tears. I couldn’t believe he planned all this and kept it from me. He was also crying as he got down on one knee and said “will you marry me?” Of course I said yes. I couldn’t believe it. Vicky had obviously caught the whole thing on camera and showed us the photos after we all dried our eyes
when we got back to the cabin, Elisha and Alex had made spaghetti bolognese (my favourite meal) and set up a really romantic dinner for us with candle and fairy lights everywhere.
