Samantha and Andrew
How We Met
Andrew and I met in 2013 at the very beginning of our senior year at Penn State. Ironically we both grew up only 20 minutes away from each other, shared several mutual friends, almost attended the same high school, and I even sat in front of him in a freshman year art class. But it wasn’t until an outing with friends, the first week of fall semester 2013, that we truly crossed paths.
One night during the first week of classes, a friend of my roommate asked us to hang out. We headed out to a fun college bar where Andrew and I started to talk. We had “known” of each other, but truly never had an actual conversation. Not too long after arriving, we were already glued to one another. Laughing, smiling, faces glowing- I think everyone knew where this was going. When some music came on we all got up to dance. As Andrew pulled me in and the moment seemed perfect, I boldly decided to kiss him! 18 days later and we were officially dating.
How He Asked
After 5 years of dating, Andrew and I have experienced many seasons together, but autumn seems to be by far our favorite. Andrew was born and spent the first half of his childhood living in Upstate New York. We had always talked about visiting there, specifically the Finger Lakes. So this past summer we finally decided to plan a trip.
On Friday, October 5, 2018, we began our 4-hour ride up north. We spent the car ride admiring all the fall foliage, discussing what we were most excited about, and just talking about life. I’m a planner, so when Andrew said he made a dinner reservation for that evening I could not stop asking questions. He said we needed to be ready at 4 pm and that I should wear something nice. Well, that only produced more questions, which he was reluctant to give much detail. Around 3:45 we hoped in the car and headed towards the top of Seneca Lake. Being in the Finger Lakes, I assumed he planned some type of private wine tasting. I was wrong.
We arrived at a beautiful hotel, Geneva on the Lake. Confused, I asked him what we were doing there and he began to guide me out of the car. Instead of entering the lobby, Andrew said he wanted to show me the gardens near the lake. We began walking down a path and just as I was pointing out a beautiful swimming pool, of all things, I felt Andrew release my hand. When I turned around he was down on one knee and asking me to be his wife. I immediately burst into the happiest tears and before even seeing the ring, I said yes over and over. Andrew will tell you that this was his favorite part about the proposal because it wasn’t about the ring, it was about us.
Mere moments later, immersed in happy tears, kisses, and hugs, Andrew told me that there was a photographer capturing the entire moment. Anyone who knows me knows how important photos are to me and these are ones that we will cherish forever. We spent a short while taking photos around the property just before calling our immediate family to share the news! Floating on our cloud of happiness and joy, we finished out the evening with an incredible private dinner in the hotel overlooking the lake and the exact spot Andrew proposed.
