Sage and John

How We Met

It was a warm August morning at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The date was Tuesday, August 23, 2011. I had just started my undergraduate career as a freshman the day before. With the jitters of a new city, school, people, and independence, I made sure I was not going to show up to my 8am class wearing a bun and sweatpants. That may have been the best decision I made during my four years at CU, because although I did not know it at the time, Tuesday, August 23, 2011 was the day I met the man who would change my life forever. After scrambling to find the right building and classroom in CU’s maze of a campus, I walked in a bit flustered to seats and tables already filled with my fellow students. I quickly found an open seat at a table with three very intimidatingly cute guys. One of them was special, though. To my left sat a tall, dark-haired boy with bright green eyes. He looked sleepy and generally uninterested in the subject at hand, but there was something about him that made me want to get to know him better. After several weeks of what I thought was giving heavy doses of hints that I was interested in seeing him outside of class, he finally picked up on some of them and asked “if I had a number”. Let’s remember, it was 2011, not 1911, and phones were an implied technology that everyone possessed. Being the sarcastic person that I am, it took everything in me to not tease him about his pick-up line. But I was so happy and relieved that all of my hard work and persistence had finally paid off. I was finally able to give John Brewer my phone number, and as cliche as it is, the rest is history. Nearly five years later, we are engaged and I couldn’t be more happy and excited to spend the rest of my life with the shy and clueless boy that has turned into the most wonderful man a girl could ask for.

How He Asked

While John was home on leave from the Army in July, he had expressed to me that he wanted to take me on a picnic one day after I got off work. I left the office a little early, cause well, it was a Friday and I was excited to see my man! I drove down to his parents house in Castle Rock, where he was waiting for me. He already had the cooler packed and we loaded up into the car. I was not really sure where he was taking me, but he reassured me it was a beautiful spot. After about twenty minutes of dirt road driving John parked the car and told me we had to walk the rest of the way. As we started to walk through a field to a ledge overlooking the valley, I noticed some stakes driven into the ground in a winding path. On each stake were pictures of John and I throughout the five years of our relationship. I was in awe by how much work he put into a picnic, and a little embarrassed that I was just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Finally after we walked the path of memories he so elaborately constructed, there was a vase of flowers and one more large picture at the ledge overlooking the valley. We enjoyed the beautiful scene of Pikes Peak and the green valley below for several moments, and the next thing I know, I turn around and John is down on one knee. I have to be honest, the whole thing is a bit of a blur, but I can remember the big moments. John expressed his unwavering love and devotion for me, and asked me to marry him and spend the rest of my life with him. I obviously said yes, once I realized I was not dreaming and everything in that moment was real. John could not have picked a more perfect moment or place to pop the question. The time and effort he put into making that day so special, and just the way I would have wanted, says everything anyone needs to know about the man I am lucky enough to call my fiance.
