Riley and Jacob
How We Met
My freshman year in high school, I went to a football game with a friend. After the game, we were walking to the car when I saw a beautiful girl waving in my direction. I had never met her before and had no idea who she was waving at, but I saw a pretty girl waving, so of course, I waved back. Turns out, she was actually waving at my friend, whom she had been talking to for a short time.
The next Monday at school, I was walking through the hallways when I saw that same girl at her locker. So I stopped and introduced myself as the idiot that waved at her at the football game the past week.
We talked for a few minutes before we had to go to class, but I still wanted to get to know her more. Later that day, I asked my friend for her number. The first text I ever sent my future fiancé was a pick-up line, and I think that set the perfect tone for our relationship.
Not even a week later I asked her to be my girlfriend and to my surprise, she accepted. We have been inseparable ever since, and our relationship has grown in so many ways.
I feel so fortunate to have found the love of my life at such an early age. I think people who date from a young age have a sort of special, playful bond that goes beyond best friends.
We were so very fortunate to be able to attend college together as well, and we continue to learn and grow together.
How He Asked
When I woke up on November 5th, I knew it was going to be a special day. It was my 21st birthday, and I didn’t doubt Jacob had a full day planned. He woke me up with a lovely breakfast, and we took our time getting ready, then he took me to get my nails done and to go shopping. He had told me that there was going to be a surprise later in the day, but I had no idea how big of a surprise I was in for.
I wasn’t too suspicious because he goes all out for every occasion. Regardless, I was super nervous all day and just had this very anxious feeling. We came back after shopping for some lunch that he prepared- cooking is one of our favorite couple activities, and eating is even better. Afterwards, we went back out shopping to continue searching for a perfect 21st birthday outfit, so needless to say, I got even more stressed out.
We came back to get ready, and the whole time, my nerves were going crazy. I tried my best to make sure everything was perfect because I just had this feeling. We had talked about getting engaged and the timeline we had in mind for getting married, so I knew it would be soon, but Jacob wanted to make sure that it would be a surprise no matter what.
As soon as we got in the car to leave for dinner, I could feel his nervousness too. I can’t say it didn’t cross my mind, but still, I wasn’t too suspicious because he is notorious for planning some really great surprises.
We went to dinner at a really great steak restaurant, and I ordered my first “adult beverage” to help ease the nerves. During dinner, I was super annoying and kept pestering him with questions about the surprise, and it didn’t help that he disappeared for a good while during dinner to “go to the bathroom”.
After dinner, we got in the car to go home, and we were almost home when he took a quick turn and said, “We are going to your surprise”. After driving for a few minutes, we pulled into a parking lot of an industrial area I didn’t recognize, and I was told to stay in the car. A few minutes later, he came back to get me, and I jokingly said, “You’re going to kill me.” To be fair, it was late at night and did look like a pretty great place for a horror movie… until you got inside.
We walked down some stairs to a beautiful open room with exposed brick and trees growing in it with string lights- The Tree Room. It was perfect. I saw the candles and rose petals lining the pathway and heard music, and that’s when I knew. We walked into the room, and I started shaking. When we got to the end, he started telling me everything I could ever want to hear, but I was in total blackout mode and in such disbelief. We were both so nervous and had been waiting so long.
At this point in time, we had been dating over six years and have talked about this moment since we were sixteen. And it was finally here! We both were sobbing before he could even get out the first words. Everything was perfect. He could not have picked a more “me” place. I obviously loved the place and only said it about a million times in the video. And that ring! Wow.
After the most perfect proposal, the photographer popped out, and I was told that everything was caught on video! Jacob had a hidden microphone, and he told me he had disappeared during dinner because the clip holding it on had fallen off, so he stripped down to his underwear in the bathroom to try to find the clip. Talk about some crazy looks!
After some pictures, we left to go back to his apartment, and when we got there, all of our friends popped out and gave me a surprise birthday/engagement party! I could not have asked for a better day or a more perfect fiancé!
