Recreation of the First Date: Jay and Abigail
How We Met: We met in February 2012 while attending Cornerstone University. Jay was a graduating Senior and I (Abi) was a sophomore preparing to transfer to Grand Valley. After meeting at a mutual friends apartment, where we had both been lured over for food, this Facebook message happened the following day :
Jay: Hey I got a question for you, what do you think about meeting up sometime this week for coffee?
Abi: Uh, I wasn’t expecting that, but okay!
Our First Date: Sparrows in East Town
Jay wisely chose to take me out for coffee, avoiding food and any other activity that could be potentially embarrassing on a first date. He picked me up at 6:00 on Friday February 17th. On our way to his car, I told him that I had never been on a date before. He was pretty shocked, but decided to risk social awkwardness and take me along anyway. We went to Sparrows, a tiny coffee shop in East Grand Rapids. About halfway into our date, eight of Jay’s friends barged into the shop looking for him because they had seen his truck in the parking lot. Talk about first date pressure!
After four hours of talking at Sparrows, we went over to his house to watch The Dark Knight. He didn’t take me home until 1:30 in the morning!
Our Engagement: I think that Jay’s version of our engagement story is much better than mine, but since he is working hard on other wedding plans, I will do my best to fill you in. As I understand it, he purchased my gorgeous ring right after Thanksgiving 2012. I was completely clueless, and have no idea how he kept it a secret for three months! He also had a plan in the works. He asked his employer and co-workers at Coastline Studios to film the proposal at Sparrows (where we went on our first date) and also planned to recreate our date by having a group of friends barge in again like they had the first time. It was a strategically devised plan that included an interview with Jay before hand, and the film crew meeting at Sparrows to map out where they would be set up so that I could not see them and they could get good shots of us.
On February 17th, 2013, Jay took me back to Sparrows for our anniversary date. It was very crowded when we got there, and he quickly suggested that we sit at the table near the front with the pretty flowers. He excused himself to the bathroom, and while he was gone, six of our friends came strolling in through the front door!
Jay appeared a moment later with a mic hooked to his shirt! I was really confused why he had a mic on, but decided I should just go along with it and see what happened.
He opened my gift and card, and then handed me his.
This is what it said: “To my Sweet Pea with Love: this was our first date one year ago today; friends barging in included. And I can’t believe it’s been only one year and five days since I happened to be in the same room as you. When my only thought was, “Hey, she’s cute.” Now I think, “How blessed am I to have such a loving, beautiful, hilarious, and somehow even-more-ridiculously-cute-than-when-I-first-met-her Christian woman to call my own?” and the only thought that follows that is this moment here…”
He got down on one knee, pulled out the ring and said, “Abigail Lael Hansen, will you marry me?” And of course, I said yes….
