Rachael and Gaelan
How We Met
I met Gaelan in Korea right before I joined the Army, and he had just arrived to Korea on his first assignment in the Army. It was pure luck that I met him before I left for training. We went out to karaoke with a big group as a “Welcome to Korea” event, and there, I fell in love with the guy in glasses who could belt out a tune.
How He Asked
I had told Gaelan that one of my bucket list dreams was to go on a cruise to Alaska, and on my birthday this year, he gave me a card that said, “What do you want for your birthday?” on the front, and “Never mind, Alaska later…” on the inside. I burst into tears out of joy for the surprise and laughter for the pun.
On the third stop of the cruise, we went on a shore excursion to Davidson Glacier in Skagway. I noticed a photographer from the cruise was on our excursion. I didn’t think anything of it as the photographer asked me to snap some photos of him along the way. It turned out Gaelan had asked him to come along to capture the proposal! In rubber waders, rain gear, and boots, he rummaged through his backpack for a book he had hand painted with a poem of our love story.
I didn’t even notice because my back was turned to admire the brilliant turquoise blue glacier. He read me the book, page by page, and at the end, he got down on one knee and proposed with the ring he had been nervously carrying the entire trip. I was in complete shock because I didn’t even know he had bought a ring and had persuaded me that this wasn’t a proposal trip, as all my friends had guessed. I was completely floored and couldn’t answer for a few minutes. Finally, he stuttered, “Is that a yes?” Of course I said yes! I couldn’t believe all the details he considered to make everything so special, and the backdrop of the glacier could not have been more stunning. Alaska will forever be special to me now!
