Andrew + Nicole: Proposal at the Adler Planetarium
How we met: Nicole and I met while working in Omaha, Nebraska for the same company. She is originally from there and moved from Colorado to be closer to her family, which included a newborn niece. I moved to Omaha after accepting my first job out of college at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Nicole and I are both very professional, so neither of us was willing to pull the trigger and ask the other out until it was blatantly obvious that was the direction the relationship was heading. We both knew we were perfect together almost immediately, and we haven’t looked back since.
How he proposed: Nicole and I had twice before taken a Friday off of work together just to enjoy the day. We would do things like go to brunch and catch a movie. A month or so ahead of the date I had set for the proposal, I asked Nicole if she would want to take another Friday off soon. After going back and forth on scheduling, I made her think that she had chosen the Friday we would take off, knowing myself that it had to be that day. The timing was crucial, because I had hired a photographer, Peter, to capture the moment, so I had to work with his schedule as well.
The day arrived, and we went to brunch in the morning at Kanela Breakfast Club, followed by manicures. Again, I made Nicole think the manicures were her idea, but I knew she would kill me if she had to take pictures of the ring on her hand without perfect nails. Nicole also believed that we had a dinner reservation at 6:30 downtown. I told her that we should go for a quick walk down by the Adler Planetarium, because “my co-worker said it was a great view.” Peter knew the plan and was situated perfectly at an angle that would make for a great picture. When we arrived at the mark, I told Nicole that she should stand by the water, and I would take a picture of her on my phone to send to her mom. Feeling the weight of what was about to happen, I paused in that moment to to take in every last detail of the moment. I took the photo and when putting the phone back into my pocket, I swapped it for the ring. I stood next to Nicole and put my arm around her, explaining what she and her family have meant to me in our time together. I then got down on one knee and asked the most important question of my life.
After she said yes, I informed her that we didn’t actually have a 6:30 dinner reservation, but a 7:30 reservation at Piccolo Sogno, a nice Italian restaurant downtown. AND, we weren’t going home after that, because I had made a reservation for a suite at the James hotel for us to celebrate through the night.
