Courtney and Nick's Proposal at her Sorority Formal

Proposal at her Sorority FormalI first met Nick when I was 8 years old. I was walking home from school by myself on snowy, winter day. Before I could brace myself for an attack, Nick and another boy came running up behind me and smashed snowballs on my head and down my coat. I ran home crying and hated Nick for years after.

Fast forward to middle school, and Nick and I began to become friends (as he only lived a street away). Our friendship took a turn for flirting when Nick told me I was beautiful one morning standing at the bus stop.  I began high school, and I also began my relationship with Nick.

Nick and I have been together since, and he is now in pursuit of a law degree and I’m finishing my undergraduate degree in accounting. During my time at Simpson College, I joined a sorority and made friends that will last a lifetime.

How did Nick ask? My sorority has a fall formal dinner and dance every year. He recruited my best friends for the process. My best friend started the proposal process by taking me out of the ballroom and handing me a piece of paper, and on that piece of paper was a picture of me and nick and a quote. On the bottom of the paper, it told me to go find my next friend. I walked in the ballroom and saw my next friend holding another piece of paper with a different picture of Nick and I and yet another quote. It also told me to find another friend of mine! I circled around towards the back of the room going from one friend to the next, each with a different picture and quote. My last friend gave me a picture and told me to go find Nick. Right at that moment, Nick and I’s song “Bless the Broken Road” began playing overhead and the dance floor split clear open as I walked in the middle to find Nick standing there with a box in his hand. He pulled me on to the floor and danced with me for a few moments as I cried in his arms. He pulled away from me and then got down on one knee and said, “I promised you when I was 15 that I would love you forever, and this is me keeping my promise to you. Courtney, will you marry me?” the answer came quickly and he swooped me into his arms and danced around with me. He stopped and pointed towards the door of the ballroom and there was my family and his family. They had been standing there and watched the whole proposal without me even knowing.

Nick and I were overwhelmed with congratulations and pictures and tons of love. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. My proposal story was my fairytale.
