Poppy and Clément

How We Met

Clément and I met in October 2016 right next to London Tower bridge. It was my first date in over 3 years and I was absolutely terrified. The second we met everything was easy and we spend the evening chatting by the river Thames and drinking the drink that everybody now associates us with ( Gin and tonic). We got chatting and I honestly believed someone like him was too good to be true. That’s when I discovered it was. He was only in London for 2 more months before moving to Switzerland and eventually back to his hometown, Paris. I decided to throw caution to the wind and we embarked on an amazing two months. We said ‘I love you’ 8 days after meeting and Clément told me, a month into our relationship that once he graduated, a year and a half from now, he was going to ask me to marry him.

Christmas as quickly arrived and in a flurry of tears and goodbyes Clément left London and the city felt a whole lot emptier. For the next 6 months, fleeting visits and late-night phone calls were what was the norm for our relationship and I quickly because used to the distance, we traveled to see each other when we could.

On the 14th July 2016, Clément took me to visit his hometown, Paris, a city I had never set foot in before but like all girls, had dreamt about the romantic promise of the city. I fell in love with Paris just as quickly as I fell in love with one of its local men and made the decision, a few months later, to quit my job, give up my rent in London and leave my life in London behind. On the 29th September 2016, I arrived, with two ginormous suitcases at my new home. A place I had only spent 48 hours in before this. Maybe I was stupid. Was I thinking too optimistically? My racing thoughts were quickly settled when I saw a talk French man striding towards me on the Eurostar platform and scoop me up. No, I hadn’t made the wrong choice. I was home now.

How He Asked

7 months flew by and I threw myself into my amazing new job (which I was lucky to find!), learning a new language and making new friends. Life with Clément was easier than I could ever imagine and he made every effort to include me in his friendship group and make me feel welcome. The time came for Clément to end his studies and begin to work, at the end of April 2018. True to his word, I arrived home from 2 weeks of travel with my work on May 1st to an apartment full of flowers and a gin and tonic sat on the table next to a white bag.

After getting the green light from Clément I was allowed to look in the bag, finding a single piece of paper folded up. I opened it and saw the words ‘Turn around’. When I turned around he was on his knee and asked me to spend my life with him and be his partner in crime.
