Katie and Brad's Perfect Proposal Under the Brooklyn Bridge

Marriage Proposal Under the Brooklyn Bridge

How We Met

We were asked to go on a blind date by mutual family friends. Brad said yes after Facebook-stalking me, and as he says, “realizing she was clearly out of my league.” I said yes after also looking at Brad’s social media profiles, and heard he worked on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and was getting his helicopter pilot’s license (neither of which were true). On our first date we realized that we went to the same junior high and rode the same bus to get to school. We even graduated from the same college the same year and had a lot of mutual friends. We never once met before, timing is everything!

How He Asked

I was teaching middle school in Phoenix and Brad was working in finance in Manhattan. We racked up a lot of frequent flyer miles to visit each other. One weekend when I was in NYC visiting, Brad planned an entire day together. We went to brunch at the famous Sarabeth’s in the city; our waiter asked us if we were on our honeymoon. I guess we just looked like we were in love! It was the first day of nice spring weather that year, so we rode a tandem bike through Central Park where Brad told me he had a surprise for me back at his apartment. He gave me a handwritten scrapbook detailing how we met and fell in love, complete with pictures. I cried as I read it. I would have suspected that the proposal was coming, but we are very traditional and I had no idea that he had already asked my dad for permission over Easter. We got dressed up and ready to go to a nice dinner in Brooklyn. Brad had told me that he tried to get reservations there on Valentine’s Day but it was booked up months in advance so this was the soonest he could get us in. In reality, the whole thing was planned and he just wanted to make sure I was dressed up for the proposal. He said he wanted to get there a little early so we could watch the sunset from park, so we hopped in a car and made our way over.

We were walking along the river and he was telling me how much he loves me and how lucky he is to have me. We were under the Brooklyn Bridge just as the sun was setting over Manhattan, when we turned a corner and I saw rose petals scattered on the ground. That’s when I knew. I started squealing with excitement and could not stop hugging him. Brad was laughing because he couldn’t get the ring out of his suit coat with my arms wrapped around him.

He finally managed to get the box out of his pocket and got down on his knee. It was the easiest question I have ever answered! Everything about the day was perfect, including the fact that he hired a photographer to perfectly capture the moment.
